130hp tractor costs

Why is everyone obsessed with going new or getting up the years. Do many people think buying a second similar sized tractor and have 2 second hand older tractors rather than 1 new tractor

If you work out all your machinery costs per clock hour and sit and look at it for long enough you'd sell up and get a job as a postman or delivering for tescos. It can be an important thing to work out when comparing 2 or 3 brands of tractor when looking to buy one to see which is most cost effective for you but i think you need to look at whether you can do the job without it.

I am thinking the same, it would make life lot easier here to have two 15 year old tractors than trade the current 14 year old one in for one 2 year old one - The capital requirement for both scenarios being probably very similar.

An interesting question to which there’s no specific answer.
Take the example of a 40k budget. Do you:
a) Buy 2 x 20k tractors, hope 1 is always available and that repairs aren’t too expensive or time consuming. Very little depreciation.
b) Buy 1 x 40k tractor, accept that breakdowns should be fewer but cost downtime and unpredictable amounts of money. Some depreciation.
c) Use the 40k as deposit on new with warranty, hopefully very good reliability but higher depreciation and repayment costs.

Agreed. I can’t help thinking that if we really costed everything out properly, especially on mixed/livestock farms it would be difficult to sleep at night.
It is. I try and cost everything as a broad average of what it should be (i.e. average between a really good and really bad tractor) and tbh if I was relying on farming for my income, I wouldn't still have a farm
