Can anyone tell me if you can let a 16 old drive a tractor on the road with no provisional licence if he/she is with a adult with full licence next to them?

Why, may I ask, would you want to do such a thing?
Got young lad doing a few jobs for me and wants to get involved with farming, anyway he's really keen to pull trailer doing maize, he seems to think that he could do it if his dad rode next to him. I said I don't think that is allowed.

Don't let him on the road in a tractor until he's 40. And then only under supervision.
We have had 2 overturns on trailers her in the last 40 year
the first was a 62 year old employee who had been driving tractor all his live
the other was a 20 year old with 6 years tractor driving experience Just getting dark on a road where the signs for the bend had been wiped out by a car the previous week Now always slows down at night

average age 41

you can’t have passenger in a tractor either

the 2nd seat is for “operator training” I believe, insurance doesn’t cover carrying a passenger on the road ?

and a 16 year old needs a provisional - he can then drive to a test ONLY - unless things have changed recently

Never mind if he thinks he can do it do you think he can?
Also if his father has no experience of tractor work that's not going to help him much either. Regardless of the law sounds like a big no to me.

He's got fair experience for his ages to be fair. He would only be on the small/ spare 8 ton trailer.

You know what he's capable of so it is your desicion to make. When all said and done you are the one who will be in the s**t if it goes wrong.
Give the lad all the encouragement you can but keep him safe and aware.

I’d not do it, you should be ok in a field only insurance and legally wise, if he can do a college course like nptc tractor Ticket ( maybe £250.00 )may help you gain a wanting employee for future years which will pay off. teach him to plough and power harrow but no road work till he has his car lisence.

a local cowboy setup in Shropshire set off with a 16-17 year old On a MP hire tractor with no insurance as they said it knocked the hourly rate down too much, lad threw the trailer over in front of a certain farmer / quarry owners house in the early hours trying to light a cigarette, twisted the hitch on the tractor and wrote their trailer off. Don’t think they told MP hire as they set to trying to straighten the hitch with a telehandler and sledge hammers. They often pay people the son dredges from the local pub by filling their pickups with red diesel too

total rogue setups. Few miles further across another setup put a young kid on a 150r Deere and a twin rotor rake it got impounded by police going down the main Shrewsbury road.

I dare say the latters insurance is sky high now. Pretty sure both machines involved were MP hires too....

Honestly never knew that. 😯
What about a co-worker with a legitimate (work) reason to travel to the same location?

i’m not 100% certain but unless registered to carry passengers with required number of seats on v5 etc i think you would be uninsured should the worst happen

@Nigel Wellings will know more re insurance implications and be better informed than me on this ? or @Simon Chiles is very good on this subject

when my lad could drive the tractor before his test he stayed in the field taking off the combine
he is now the best at taking off getting under the spout quickly enough for short fields

the Other lad that year Who passed his test just before harvest is now a top operater
learnt to back with his mirrors up tramlines While waiting for the combine to be full
then had 18 months in australia on a 40 foot header and aartic tractor all before he was 21

tractor test is no use as most tractors and trailers are too wide so it is illegal to be on the road
