17 day old calf with snotty nose .....

Thank you all so much for your advice. We've had a postmortem done and the guy who performed it thinks that's she's been stood on/ laid on by Veronica. When he opened her up her she was absolutely full of fluid but her bladder was empty.

It's a relief in a way - although we're not in this game to keep them all as pets and eventually it has to be in the farms best interests financially, it's bloody awful seeing an animal suffer, especially one so young.

Thank you all again.

A shame but at least you know why. Onwards and upwards I suppose.

Sorry to read this - but at least you know the cause and next time can maybe take measures to ensure the cow doesn’t do the same thing again. Luckily never had it here but they have over in the dairy herd and one cow tried it twice... next time Veronica calves, maybe set up a pen with the pen calf can go in til it’s wick enough to lie up against the pen wall ? I’d be lairy of trusting her again until she’s raised another successfully.

No idea if it really is helpful but I always leave the shed lights on for a couple of nights after they’ve calved, just in case!,

Thank you for your advice! She's not a young cow, she's 12 and I saw the calf that she had raised prior to having this one and he was one hell of a calf, she'd had two calves before she left Thistlegrove (grandad's farm) and they had both been fine. She really is so quiet and so calm that I'm amazed this has happened, all I can think is that somethings startled her.

Such a shame as the calf was one hell of a beast. I think we're going to harvest some embryos from her, we'll get there in the end!
