Can you supply some references for that? I am just interested in such things and this is the first time I've heard of this issue. Not good if a common issue.
Mechanic in the yard here mentioned this just the other day as another chap has just bought a Velor with that engine in, apparently timing chains are an issue.

I know you uk guys like to support land rover but there are lots of other brands.
Mercedes are worth considering too. V6 diesel engine used in millions of cars and sprinters. 225 hp. The taxi man's choice in Germany.
I have a Mercedes ml with 250k klms. It records the hours and average speed until you reset the clock. At my average speed it would have 5k hours on it.
I paid €10k for it 5 years ago and hopefully it will do another 5 years. View attachment 972039
I had one of those. Cheapest car to run we ever had. Did 90,000 miles in three years it only a spring or 2 one brake caliper tyres and apart from oil changes every 10,000 nothing else

I think among JLR's wealthy (or delusions of such) clientele the capacity to waste large amounts of money on over priced, ugly, impractical, high maintenance, luxury goods is seen to be a good way of expressing the extent of one's excessive cash pile.
Only peasants with jobs need reliable motor vehicles. The true elite have no imperative to be anywhere at all, the wheels only exist to occupy the driveway and scream "Money!'

If you get a Disco make sure you keep up the warranty. Ours is a 2016 Disco 4 bought secondhand from a main dealer. Folks said you're paying over the odds for it but it had a 2 year warranty and that has cost Landrover around £13000 so far rather than me. It expires in August and LR have offered to extend it for around £1100 for the next 12 months. Couldn't get the acceptance form sent off quickly enough 😄😄

That’s an angry post? Why so?

I get a lift to meetings with a wealthy guy with a fleet of brand new range rovers and other land drovers parked on his yard. All he says is never ever ever ever own one out of warranty.

His range rover is lovely to be in massive glass roof, monster engine, speakers in the back of the seats so its easy to talk etc but is 120-140k I think.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

We went in my xc60 once and he couldn't believe how nice it was. Well that what he said maybe he was blowing smoke up my backside.

Beat me to it, D4's finished in 2016 I think, read on a D5 owners group of an unfortunate soul who's D5 had shiit itself in a similar manner over the weekend.
So, my lowly D3 that's currently on 130k+ and has been far from trouble free in the 7 years I've owned it might as well stay as a new engine and gearbox if it gets that bad would be 3.5k fitted, if I put a heap of money on top and get a D4 it might snap the crank, and put an even bigger heap of money on top for a D5 for the potential of that going bang spectacularly too! what the hell is going on with JLR? Why are they sooo bad for reliability and seem to be getting worse? I'm sure I read of someone with a terminally ill new Defender recently too, similar engine issues.
3.5k for new engine and gearbox. Where is this at. Currently at 291000 on a 2008 d3 and new engine is north of 5k here.

You're correct, just checked my quote and the gearbox only (inc torque converter) fitted would be £2650, Bristol transmissions, I've looked through my messages and don't have a formal quote for an engine, but yes, my bad should be more like 7.5 to 8k for both.

I have been considering a D5 with the 2l diesel engine. I saw the workshop manager from the local LR dealer at the weekend (he is a member of our classic car club).

He told me they currently have 5 Discoveries in for new engines under warranty, all less than a year old.

I'd love a 3l but the road tax here in Belgium (plus the initial tax on registration) is extremely painful - it's based on engine size.

Did he mention how the 21MY 300hp ingenium engines are going?

Well, the chap's Velar has been taken in today, apparently there is a "whistle" that they noticed when they serviced it, they are having it for a min of three days, he didnt know what the whistle actually was but we guessed turbo possibly. This is the 2ltr diesel engine with only 13k miles on the clock
