Something missing here....if they know the breeder, know the age then the breeder's records ought to clear this up in minutes. If it looks like a fish and smells like a fish it's probably something fishy.
Doesn't detract from the fact who ever did it was an utter, utter barsteward.
I am sure it happens. Before moving here we had a commercial free range flock on the Black Isle and one night/early morning a cratefull of PoL pullets arrived about 50 yards from our entrance. The crate was not there, but it had had shavings in as they were on the road.
A couple of before dawn phone calls alerted me to the supposed fact that we had hens on the road and some had been run over. Obviously everyone assumed they were ours. My initial reaction was I had somehow forgotten to close one of the sheds the previous night. As soon as I saw the shavings I knew what had happened. Why anyone was moving around that particularly back road with a load of pullets in the middle of the night is a mystery. Nobody else anywhere near kept more than half a dozen hens. I did end up with about 18-20 survivors (cannot remember the exact number) so worth about £100 at the time. Nobody ever came looking for them.
