I just bought this tractor and noticed on 1st run around pasture that steering is real loose.Is that normal or does it need something?

Front down shaft, batteries bounce about, acid spills out and runs down em, common problem, better now with sealed batteries, king pins also,

If its the same design as the 500 series ,rebushing them is a pig of a job and its a specialised tool to recut the casting they sit in .

sadly have to agree I had exactly the same problem when I bought a second hand 590 from a dealer who promised it was good to go, it was , anywhere it wanted but the direction you were headed

it is the same, an adjustable reamer will be needed! yonks since i did my 590! but it wandered all over

It wanders quite a bit.Turn steering 1/3 round before tires move

I remember the 590s ,well any of that series wanting to put you in the hedge bottom ,,from memory its full front end strip down to get at it ,,MF dealer at the time was Chandlers in Lincoln and it was a days job when everything came apart easily , all these years on ,every bolt will be rusted up .

take front grill off, have someone turn the steering and see what you find, battery may need removing to see, also look underneath front casting at same time, or jack it up and turn wobble etc for excess play!

Don't believe all you read. Asses where the worst wear is and tackle it a bit at a time. There were special tools to ream the new bushes out but some don't need much and the bushes you get nowadays dont seem to have as much meat on them. Make sure you clean the hole well then adjustable reamer will do. The only pin that might be sized is the one that pins the ram to the tombstone. Other than that it's a straightforward job.

I entirely agree ...... Did my 565 last year. Did the steering shaft bushes & various others. Yes, it's a bit involved, but the parts are cheap ..... even the main steering shaft isn't very expensive if it's worn & has to be replaced. Just remember that it has to come out upwards & go back in from the top of the front casting ....... and be careful when you try to remove the steering ram securing pin ........ If you can't get it out, you can still do the job with the ram in-situ.

20 acres to clear is not nearly as bad in Oklahoma as it could be in other places, and he's not likely to have much trouble with bolts rusted tight either. So yes, loose steering is normal, and yes, it does need something. Wiggle the steering and see where the play is, then decide how much you want to fix right now. Nothing wrong with loose steering for a lot of work, but there might be some easy things to fix to make it more usable.

I checked it out and the gear box is turning and the hydraulic cylinder in front of tractor is turning but drag link and wheels are not.So its something on front end.
