1989 jcb 3cx Gearbox issue

Hi,

Have a 1989 JCB 3cx with a 4 speed manual gearbox and whilst changing gear it wouldn't select the required gear, nothing feels like it is engaging with the stick within the pattern.
Doesn't feel like there is anything slack on linkage and just feels like gearbox is solid when trying to select gear.
Is there anything that can be done externally to try and narrow down problem or rectify it.
Thanks

They are like that, you will need to go under the cab and double check its actually going into gear, any gear will do to start with. Feels really spongy in the cab, best to leave it in drive and clutch when you feel it dragging/grating as you select on the gear stick ..............
If you find its actually in gear then check for disconnected wires/fuse gone on the electric shuttle.
Ours needs WD40 in the switch now and then, but we only loose forward, not both.

Consulted the service manual and couldn't find nothing obvious there as it more caters for a full rebuild, ended up rocking machine back and fore with back actor and after moving about 0.1m the selector allowed us to select a gear so panic over as was stuck in field in neutral which is probably not worst thing that could have happened.
Cheers

The gearstick turrets are very prone to wear on these, they wear on the top ball and then a round peg with a square head breaks off, and there are some plastic bushes in there that wear and sometimes crack, normal problem is very sloppy gear lever and sometimes comes out of the selectors.

Also can be worn sycro's and or main shaft bearing failure or handbrake disc nut loose and then been over tightened pre loading bearings too much.

Other than the turret on top it its all internal. Could also be clutch packs dragging etc not letting it in gear.
