Supposed to get the train to the Highland Show on Friday morning from Durham. Train was running and unaffected from the Strike-return on Sunday was- then a truck crashed on the line past Newcastle so all trains cancelled on Friday morning. Contacted friends who were traveling with us they volunteered to drive 👍 .They had difficulty getting through Durham due to some poor sole threatening to jump off the viaduct.
So he turns up eventually in his newish BMW x1 drive 4 or something very nice car . Range about 190 miles and that’s driving hard . Got to Edinburgh hotel on the Royal Mile with car park and as luck would have it charging point in the car park. He’s got an app which tells him how many miles/battery % it’s got . Hotel didn’t charge for parking and charging the car . Returned today. Dropped us off and he still 35 miles left to get him back home . Possibly one of the best all round cars I’ve been in . Very smooth comfortable (very)quick full of tec . Talking about it with him has changed my view on electric cars . I rarely do long journeys so be fine that way .

If he had had to pay to charge what would it of cost ,strange how hotels can give away electricity but I have yet to stay in one that fills mine with liquid fuel

A mate of mine had his son visit the house for a few days.
He reckoned that the Tesla car he had cost around £6 a day to charge, doing up to 120 miles a day.
Electric Domestic rates are domestic rates ,or are we all missing a trick and not heard charging an ev vehicle, electric is cheaper or discounted tariffs??

I wonder if this is partly the reason the government will have little to do with taking the sting out of fuel prices
Pushing people in a certain direction
Of course it is. Same reason as electric generation demand has reduced from 40GW to 30GW. We are already self sufficient in petrol refining with a 10% reduction in diesel we would also be self sufficient in diesel refining. So pricing policy must keep diesel more expensive than petrol with the ultimate aim of going electric.

Is there any car that will wirelessy charge like a phone,it would be great to just park on a saucer. Thanks all for the response on charging costs,it has surprised me as when I looked at ground heat source 15 years ago it was said that electricity had an efficiency of about 25% compared to oil to produce a unit of heat( I think)

We charge ours from solar panels or at night. Darn sight cheaper than £140 to fill up the pick up or Discovery that then do less than 30 mpg.
Even compared to 50mpg, an electric car using 25p unit 'tricity will cost half to run per mile.

Having just had to sort a new leccy contract, where could I have found some of this 25p stuff? :scratchhead:

Is your electric vehicle in any way comparable with the Disco, or should you really be comparing it to a lighter, fuel efficient vehicle?

Does that perhaps depend on the motivation of those you ask? When we were looking ten years ago, I was regularly told that electric heating was near 100% efficiency, and far better than any of the alternatives.
We went with biomass, but purely because of the daft RHI payments the govt was throwing at the technology.

Governments make massive tax income from petrol / diesel fuels & give lots of incentives to the fossil fuels industry. They DONT want people to stop using petroleum products

they cant tax home grown electricity & havent yet worked out how to get the equivalent of fuel taxes out of electric vehicles, although Im guessing a distance travelled / km rate would be the fairest way to do it

dont be fooled, govts WANT you to remain dependent on big business & be vulnerable to any supply or price shocks of diesel / petrol etc

they DONT want you to be independent & provide for yourself. which IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE with electricity production & electric vehicles

its a lot easier to make electricity at home than it is diesel . . .

Skoda enyaq here - not exactly disco comparable, but largish suv. At 50p/ kwh (most I've had to pay on a longer journey) I worked out it was equivalent to a diesel doing 50mpg.
At home we're charging off the solar "for free" in summer and would hope to be somewhat less than 50p in winter even after our current 13p contract runs out.
Might even risk bringing it up with the trailer to collect some rams from Wales in due course😉
