2-3” moisture layer?

Hi all
I’m just direct drilling for the 2nd time WW (Frit-fly) into a field coming out of a 3yr grass/clover ley. (Separate issue I’ll need some advice on
The problem I have is the surface seams to not be drying out and when I dig down I’ve got fantastic structure from 2” down to spade head depth. I’m surprised because the grass and clover roots have grown through it so not sure what’s causing it? Ideas and tips welcome for what to do next summer if it’s still there? It will probably be winter oats next year so not sure I’ll have time for a decent Cc if late harvested.

So if I’ve understood your post correctly you are re-drilling wheat into a field which has been a grass/clover ley for the last three years and the surface isn’t drying?

Could this be because the decaying grass and clover is acting as a mulch, and it’s November therefore low air temp/ low sun intensity, and zero transpiration.?

Sounds the same as happens here. Without the soil being opened up even a little it won’t dry. Mine will remain wet cold and untouchable for weeks in spring but the fields next to it that was blackened a bit would be drilled with dust coming off the drill. I can see the benefits of zero til but if your soils don’t dry enough to warm and get drilled without causing structure damage what’s the point.
