2 dead ewe lambs in a week, why?

That's another dead one this morning, died threw the night where they been lying, they have been jagged twice with ovivac p, its been frosty here for a week or more, just slept away, the lmbs are health enough when rounded up, may go to Stirling tomorrow and get fresh jagging stuff and do them again, very frustrating.

im rapidly loosing faith in ovivac p have had some losses this year , all older stock moved over to bravoxin now , though still keeping going with ovivac for this year , i do do extra booster in autumn these days before movement on to keep , after a few winter losses in past . think youngsters will be done with bravoxin (better clostridial cover) then with seperate p next year

There defo not fluky, they were dosed with a straight fluke dose the last time they were dosed, triclafas 5%. I get some flukiver tomorrow as well. Jagged l mean, not dosed.

Without checking their livers you have no idea if they’re flukey or not I’m afraid.loads of farms around here are resistant to triclabendazole.flukiver is a good dose to use .

I was told by my vet that the p in ovivac p only covers one type of pneumonia, and there are four types.

We lost about 7 store lambs 6 weeks ago which were done with ovivac p. PM' D them and it was Mycoplasma pneumonia which is not covered by vaccine.
Vet advised just leaving them and it cleared up.

Get a PM done, or you’re just guessing.

I’m not suggesting it’s worth paying for it yourself if you’ve only lost two, but the vaccine company will pay to investigate it if you (& your vet) suspect pasteurella. Speak to your vet about it.

I lost 10 from a group of 140 ewe lambs last year, and ended up going through with blanket ab’s to stop it. The ewe lambs were the only ones that had received the second dose of Ovivac, and the only bunch with significant losses. The PM showed a strain that wasn’t covered by the vaccine, but my vet and I suspect their immunity may possibly have been compromised by ongoing Iodine deficiency problems too. Iodine hopefully sorted now, and none of the crossbred lambs have had anything but Bravoxin this year. Haven’t lost a ewe lamb yet this year (touches nearest wood quickly).

They are of course pre programmed to die, however the numbers always increase when they are suddenly worth more money!!

It appears that there are more strains of pneumonia that are more of an issue than they used to be.

Have some Rams lambs on good ground. Received 1 shot of vaccine, no losses. Have another batch of ewe lambs, on poorer ground, received 2 shots of vaccine, a few losses. Trying to figure out what exactly triggers the losses ?

Gone back to Bravoxin 10 (used to use Covexin 8 years ago ) .... Uni Profs told me the truth about the 'P' bit many years ago ..... that , on av'ge , you'd never recoup the extra cost , even if some lambs lost . Got sucked into system , but v unlikely to use the Vaxs with P in again . No probs so far ..... Cost difference is outrageous !

Does bravoxin do the same job as heptavac-p plus?

It covers every clostridial disease that Heptavac does, and a few more, but doesn’t pretend to give any pasteurella cover.
That cover for P costs about 40p/dose extra, so up to anyone to decide if it’s worth that. Personally, I question if it is.
Switched to Bravoxin/Covexin 2 years ago, then this summer got hit with pasteurella. On vet advice we vaccinated every sheep (ewes, lambs and tups) with 2 doses of hep p to get them back in the system. Lost a couple more of suspected pasteurella since. We have bought 1 dose of vaccine for all adult sheep pre-lambing, 2 doses for all lambs, then another 2 doses for all sheep. Must have spent near £1000 and they still die from clostridial and pasteurella diseases. Really not sure what we'll do next year.

Costed it on my small flock circa 120. Normally lose one or two suddenly this time of year just after they start coughing (always ewe lambs). 2 x ewe lambs @90 each or a much bigger bill for vaccination. Ewes haven't dropped on me yet and my theory being the exposure as a ewe lamb stops them being as susceptible their second year.

I don't vaccinate lambs. Haven't done for 15 years.

I dropped the 'P' part of Heptavac around 13 years ago on my ewes... first moving to plain Heptavac, then onto Covexin8 and now my ewes are on Bravoxin10.

I loss no more suddenly, or to pneumonia, than I did when they were all fully covered.
