Which do you prefer?

Im looking to put up a new shed and am siding with a 3 row, although 2 row sheds prvide the right amount of trough space nearly every one i have looked at have over stocked them so you might as well just give them somewhere to lie down?

Got 3 rows here in main shed. Has wide passages etc but can only get max 90 on the feed fence out of 125 in the group. Think we get away with it as we have a separate fresh group on straw for first 3-4 weeks with lots of feed space. If doing it again I would probably go down the 2 row route. Depends on price difference and yield expectations.

Two double rows of cubicles 15ft passageways either side 14ft in the middle feed on both sides with a 5ft over hang either side, they put the pins in on Tuesday and used 30cube just for the pins :jimlad:

Not sure where your farm is @Kingofgrass but you might find 5' overhang too small TBH but a lot will depend on eaves height.

just put plans in for a similar shed but have gone for an 8ft overhang down each side! (get more rain than sunshine in lancashire)

I'd watch this
and any other videos he has on YouTube there's quite a few, he talks alot of sense and if it was me I'd make sure there more feed space than cows. Intake is everything and I think I'm right in thinking you've got plenty of potential in your herd

11ft from concrete to the top of the overhang can't do anymore so the silage trailers get get along side it Inbetween the shed and the maize clamp,be about 140 cubicles then we will put another one one up in a few years I'll put some pics up next month when it's up there just making it now, shed works out just over 60k

Three rows head to head feeding down both sides here works fine as long as you don't let them get hungry.

Smart shed near hear three rows head to head feeding down both sides and along rear gable end.

If feeding in the same shed then 3 row doesn't work. You can squeeze the cows in but you restrict feed and therefore production. .
Absolute rubbish. I built a new dairy setup 4 years ago on a greenfield site. Went for 3 rows of cubicles simply due to economics. For another another 10 feet either side of the shed I can get 30% more animals. The cows are very content and there is never an issue with bullying at the feed face. The cows always have feed in front of them. Wide passages are as important as anything to allow cows room to walk about and express natural behaviour.

3 row barns are the norm in the US,I built mine the same, why would I want to shut them out or in the cubicles?

The only reason I'd ever have a 2 row would be with robots, the need to lock them in head yokes.

To bed up the cubicles? Thats the main reason ours are shut out for, to allow us to clean and bed.

The locking yokes are also great for vet checks and vaccinations.
