2 Way Radios

Keep thinking about 2 ways radios to relieve the tedium and stop people meeting on the narrow lanes. Whats the best one to go for? Digital 2 way rather than CB? Will they all talk to each other or do all the makes have their own channels? Do handhelds work OK in tractors or do you need proper vehicle radios?

Same dilemma at the moment I’ve hired some hand held 2 way radios but inside a cab with no external aerial there poor, proper mounted ones would be really good but expensive to buy.

I started out with Motorola GP300 handhelds on uhf, they where good for about 2-3 Miles in the cab and 4-5 outside. After a couple of years I moved onto Motorola GM350 fixed mobiles, again on uhf and they will do 8-10 Miles sometimes more on a good day.
All of mine talk radio too radio but can be setup to run though a base station if you wanted.
Got all mine off eBay !.

What sort of money were you paying for the GM350s if you don't mind me asking? Have you got a Simplex channel set up?

Paid good money for mine new! Same models with a base station. The Ofcom licence is £110/year for fixed private channels but a new base station on a telegraph pole was nearly £5k fitted by professionals. If we didn't have so many radios we'd start again with digital..

CB is probably the best value for money and the most common.

The most I paid for one was about £100, usually picking them up for about £50-60 they all have the screen as well. New Ariels of eBay about £15, think I’ve about 7 sets now and yes runs on simplex setup. I don’t run though a base setup as only use them for harvest, but there bloody handy !. I got them for ease of use, ie they are always on just grab the mic and talk no fiddling with a phone finding the number and waiting for someone to answer.
And they are legal to use on the road :)

The Ofcom 'Simple UK'* license is only £75 for 5 years, so £15 per year. It only has a small number of frequencies so channels aren't strictly private, BUT most modern radios have a programmable 'tone coded' squelch function which stops incoming messages from anyone else using the same frequency. Also, Ofcom released new UHF frequencies in the spring which very few operators will be using, so if setting up a new system it would be wise to use these frequencies. There is the whole UHF versus VHF argument, horses for courses.

*dont get confused with the other 'Simple Site' license, which is less suited to ag.
