Was bad with bg then so probably grow spring wheat or barley I’d like to dd in an ideal world will be cut first week of sept. Would you leave grass until spring, spray grass off pre Christmas or plant a cover crop? I have a weaving gd drill

Beans or OSR into grass works well- you have options for grassweed control this way and the pest cycle is broken.
Rape is a bit of a no no at the moment for us do you have much experience of spring beans after grass my agronomist is a little sceptical of dd beans although very pro no-till

I have DD beans, used a claydon, basically put them in deep as we could, rolled and applied pre-em.

Beans into dying grass should work fine, I think a couple of forum members have done it. They are a big munter of a seed and the mat of grass stops BLWs germinating. Ryegrass or other grass weeds you have more grass weed options than you would in say spring barley.

we have claydon drilled sp beans into rounduped westerwold end of march 20, pre em a week or 10 days later. beans came up well and grass started to come again so we have hit it with Falcon last week. hope that should keep it right to harvest. Brome in field as well hence choice of beans to allow several cultural and chemical hits

Leave grass to green up after last cut, monitor for BG, but ideally spray off in early spring. You will get minimal cc growth drilling in early-mid September. Drill sp beans in late March if poss. Bingo!

Think this is the way to go. Have you done it before I’m a little worried about slot closure and clay shrinking and opening slots up again with putting beans in deep

If there is a good root mass that will help with keeping the slot together wouldn’t it? Just drill it when it a bit wetter, so maybe a bit earlier and put winter beans in.

I think the grass roots will hold it all together well but then I’m going through with the disc at 3 inches causing a void.

Yes, have patience for the right conditions and drill the beans about 2” deep, no need for deeper in spring. The root mass and improved OM will help keep the slot closed. Don’t drill on the wetter side as the slot will open then.

Why not just put winter beans in October or do you need the grass over winter?

I find I have to loosen the ground for dd beans, they really don’t like to go into tight ground.
