You can argue for a capacity reduction, down to what you anticipate using even after installing more capacity than the HH limit.

Yeh that was the case on new 3-phase connections about four years ago. It may have changed recently due to the new found fervour for smart metering (which are nothing than more sophisticated HH meters) as I’m sure you’re aware.

Thanks. I was curious if they were upgrading old supplies to HH also. If I remember right @Badshot had trouble with this.

As you say, HH and smart meters are similar....but they seem to charge £££ for HH meters as a standing charge.

Thanks all for the advice. I think we look at a few options including the generator. I'm a bit thick on these things - am I correct in assuming a generator can only be used on its own or can it be used along with a wired supply as a top up?

You could split the supply, so 40 caravans run on the mains supply, and the last 10 hookups you can disconnect from the mains with a changeover switch, and run them with the genny.

Or, you could do that with the whole park - run all 50 or so off the genny and use no mains for that weekend.

If you try and leave the mains connected I don't know what would happen safety-wise (other than your power co. would have a fit if they knew it was like that for a power cut), but you'd be potentially pumping juice back up the wires to feed your neighbours too!

Will need a switch over, PV panels do this automatically on a powercut, otherwise you kill the guy mending the wires.

That would be a definate no.- as mentioned above
Number of ways depending on how the loads add up
For example the maths would be something like - a 3 phase supply 160 amps / phase
Assuming caravans only need single phase supply
Each phase will supply 10 caravans @ 16 amps each
So sub main L1 to 10 caravans
Sub main L2 etc
L3 etc
So 30 caravans supplied
Another 20 caravans at peak times
So Genny capacity needed 320 amps / 3 phases= 100 amp /phase

Use your own numbers & speak to a sparky with experience of that sort of work
