Could it be plumbed into the sway button? Flick the switch with the arrows and try the sway switch? What operates the aux/3rd service have you had a grab or anything on it?

What makes you think it's manual?
They weren't ever made as manual.

The sticker below the lever shows it as the 3rd service, you sure you don't have twist grip gears?

okay so if that's his Aux the op needs to flick the switch to activate the diverter valve then work the aux lever to make the hitch work. if it still don't work then he needs to investigate the switch and the diverter valve.

If it has a retro fitted hitch, all be it a genuine one, then whoever did it, went to the trouble of fitting the stick for the hitch release handle! Could it be a genuine factory fit????

Seller told it came out the factory with it, every part looks genuine

Follow the hoses from the hitch itself, they possibly go along inside the chassis to a diverter valve. Unless I missed it, you do have an auxiliary service on the front, right?
I am not too familiar with your age of machine, but if it is like the later models, then the diverter will be bolted to the inside of the chassis, just rearward of the cab, you will have to lift the boom to access it better. Should be six hoses on it, two on one side, and four on the other. One pair of the four go to the hitch, and the other pair go up the boom to the front aux.
This valve should be controlled by the switch with the two arrows on it. If you have the means, check there is power switching at the plug. If the power is switching ok, then the valve is either stuck, or the coil has burnt out. Depending how it’s plumbed up, it will either be in front aux or rear aux when at rest and therefore when the coil is faulty. If it’s stuck, then it could be in any position. Swapping the two pair of hoses around on the valve would prove the fault is with the valve or it’s wiring/control. But, if you do this, then mark the hose positions carefully, so it can be returned to original positioning and as not to get the pairs muddled up.

Had a go at it yesterday, press button and 4 notches like my friends 526s gear selector
They have a de-clutch button on the levers so your not fighting the transmission while braking, the 3rd service lever pushes across so it does in effect feel like it has 4 positions.

Your gears are on the shuttle lever, there has never been the itl 4 speed manual torque box in the side engined loadalls.

You have bought possible the best era of loadall built, keep everything greased mainly the trackrod ends and swivels and it will serve well.

However I have an ex hewden 535-95 and fitting a puh would be the last thing id think of,they are reliable but slugs.
