2016 DTS Maize

Decided to start new thread rather than add to "Claydon maize" thread.
Got a spray customer who has drilled 120 acs with DTS this year following 50 acs last year. No Pictures but in 2015 as an experiment the contractor drilled direct into wheat stubbles, 9 rows in 3m drill using bean boots[single rows] but no means of getting fertiliser down with seed. Same day, conventional system also drilled next door fields, Sumo Trio, disced with Lemkin Rubin [heavier duty Carrier type disc/press] precision drilled with 1 cwt /ac MAP.
Result: P drilled came up 10 days later and grew away always looking nice and green with good hedge to hedge coverage.
DTS- first plants came up 10 days but took another 2 weeks for all plants to emerge, crop was slow to grow away and looked yellow until 8/10 weeks after drilling. It never caught up and was 10 inch s shorter at cutting but it did grow faster during late July/August . Plant spacing was poor down the row compared to PD but obviously more rows ie 333mm wide rather than 750mm. Customer was happy but it needed MAP to get it out the ground better.
2016- this year ,rigged up solid fert front tank etc so drilled with 1 cwt/ac MAP [down front leg]. Decided to only use 5 legs over 3m wide and blocked the other 4 [but the legs still worked ground.]. Decided [not sure why] to use A share which splits seed 5 " wide. No Precision drilled to compare with this year and none rolled either. Drilled ex WW on 5 th May and ex maize stubbles 12 th May. Its on fairly stiff ground but it was lying wet hence late drilling date[no cultivations to dry ground out]

Trouble with using the bean coulter is that the seed tends to end up at the depth the ripper is at. I did a headland with a pass with the shakerator first. It was a long way behind when I last looked. Our maize looks poor this year though.

These were all ex maize stubbles and as you can see it looks great down the rows on the whole but gappy if looking across. The Map made a difference as although no picture ,where he ran out the maize is 8 " lower and more yellow.

Looks decent! Very interested as we'll be trying some maize into stubbles next Spring with a Mzuri. Was likely going to use DAP underneath. Thanks for posting
