2016 fendt 720 fault 18.1.2a steering angle sensor

Location

I don't have the 2016 copy of the manual but 18.1.2A on mine does not refer to the wheel angle sensor but to the actual steering wheel 360 degree sensor. Powered by fuse #29, unlikely a blown fuse.

The wheel angle sensor is a 4-20 mA current loop signal, relatively easy to check but the steering wheel rotation sensor must be quite different, not sure how to check that.

EDIT: the sensor wiring diagram here. The steering wheel sensor too appears to be a 4-20 mA current loop signal sensor with a 360 degree angle range (obviously).

Thanks if you switch it off and leave it a min it will work for a few runs then brings error up again dealer going to look at it Monday

Seems this isn't a common problem if nobody else has seen it. The dealer diagnostic tool should reveal more information about it. Will be interesting to see if it was the actual sensor or a wiring issue or perhaps something completely different.

Hopefully fidds has it sorted and can help with instructions to fix it. Since November I've seen one discussion related to the Fendt wheel angle sensor where the issue was the locator part that the actual sensor reads. That part should be fixed but was not tight.

The steering in this case has a strong overshoot behaviour since the sensor sort of has a lot of play.

Ye we got ours sorted tried mini fuse board for quick cure but it didn’t so cab off and steering sensor In the orbital not had chance to try it yet but the dealer tried it and seems to think it cured

Steering sensor or the actual auto-steer valve block next to the orbitrol? We had that changed after some 50 hours of driving with auto-steer, a very common Danfoss valve isssue at the time but it was 2013 or 2014.

The steering angle sensor is at the front wheel king pin.

So had a call to today (finally) from Chandlers ( formerly Lister Wilder) They want £3500 for the Orbital steering sensor and £1200 to fit it... This doesnt sound right to me! Fidds do you know the part number fitted to yours? getting Ross Farm Machinery to quote as well..

Northern Farmer - they aid it was the sensor and not the valve. So no idea!

Fendt VarioGuide steering unit parts in the attached parts figure. No part there that I would call a sensor. The actual pre-control unit is expensive and difficult to swap on a 700 series Fendt. The cabin is supposed to be lifted up but our service man did it from the rear somehow. Still a lot of work, worth about 1000 € but the factory paid the valve on good will.

Not to sure on part number but I believe they had changed them sensor was £689 I can ask the part number do you not have any mechanics that will do the job ?

Northern Farmer thanks for the diagram... where did you get that from? Love to know how your mechanic got to it from the back. I was told 18.1.2A was the steering sensor and 18.1.3A was the steering valve??

Fidds would love to know if you fixed worked. Lets just say this started on the 7th October last year and 21 phone calls to Lister later and I still dont have a clue when it can be fixed!! Think i have found an independent mechanic who can install it alot cheaper!!

Will be using it hopefully in the morning was told by a very good ld in workshop done a hell of a lot on Fendt that no way they can be done without cab off. But you never no I think I would be getting a phone number and getting in touch to someone higher up in Fendt they’ve still sold the tractor so should help you out or at least get to the bottom of the matter have you kept a record of phone calls to them

I have records of exactly when i phoned them but not what was said. Fendt were not very helpful when i bought the tractor as I wanted to buy from another dealer as many people had said that Listers service was very poor.... but Fendt refused and prevented me using anyone else!

I was confused, as usual. Fault codes are for the steering wheel sensor and the steering valve as you say. I should have read the start of the thread carefully, seems it is the steering wheel sensor causing trouble here, not the steering angle sensor.

With a quick search I just didn't find the location of this steering wheel sensor. Is it integrated to the steering valve or placed somewhere on the steering wheel column? I feel I've seen it before but couldn't find just now.

This is the sensor that detects if the driver is turning the wheel. Could it be so expensive if it is an independent part within the steering system?

The parts diagram is from the AGCO spare parts book, on line. Or did you mean the wiring diagram earlier in the thread?

Northern Farmer - do you have a logon to their spare parts ? My dealer wont give me access!!

I originally had 18.1.2A error and then once 18.1.3A. But since thenit has only been 18.1.2A.

Just getting fed up of having to catch the steering wheel at some random part of the day!!!

Even thought about trading in the tractor against a new one.... which a local person ended up doing as he need new tyres as well and thought it was the more economical route!!

I have logon to the AGCO on-line spare parts book (covers Fendt and Valtra for me). Your tractor dealer is supposed to request access credentials for his customer from the local headquarters (at least how it works for us). No costs involved.

I found the steering wheel sensor from the parts book. I also found the A013 circuit board that was mentioned earlier but did not cure the problem if I understood right. The board plays a significant role here and is easier to access, no wonder a service guy wants to try that first.

I do not have the workshop instructions book, perhaps this sensor cannot be accessed from the cabin side.

It is frustrating if you are forced to be serviced by a sales man and a dealer/workshop who are not doing it properly. Tractor owners should keep giving feedback to the local headquarters (in good and bad). Big numbers may result to some sort of improvements even at the risk of things getting momentarily worse for one individual.

Northern Farmer you are a star.. thanks for that. Managing to limp along at the moment. Only 65 ha left to do now. So will try and get my planting done and then chase the repair for this. Yes it is wrong. Will also contact Fendt UK to complain..

Fidds - please let me know how you get on today... regards Tim

Can I ask how old the tractor was when you were having issues, had the steering valve replaced 5 weeks since after 18.1.3A error code came up and the tractor did 4 hours drilling before 18.1.2A came up, now been told that the cab will have to come off to change the sensor, really getting fed up with it now, tractor is 4 years old next month
