Which birds eat beet? We have had no rain in 3 weeks now; beet poking through but no weeds to speak of yet. First herbicides going on some beet I look after this week on some black land but only liquid fert has been applied to my own crop

I've got mega bird damage on a 30 field the rows shine perfect on the bottom 2/3 of the field but the top 1/3 has almost been totally grazed with only the odd plant still having it's cotyleden and leaves.

On a separate note has anyone heard any whispers about next year's beet price? I heard today it going to be £17 ton!!!!!!!!! I hope to fudge it's wrong info.

Can't grow beet at that price.
I too hope it's wrong info as I really like growing beet and would like to continue.

A neighbour told my cousin, who told me. it's a bit too Chinese whispers to be gospel but the chap isn't one to run on and is normally a good source.

I could barely make the numbers stack up at £20, another £240+ knocked off the margin per ha kills the job.

Wouldn't it be best if British Sugar said they no longer wanted to produce sugar and shut the factories down?

We have flea beetle damage to the beet here. Few volunteer OSR seedlings in the beet have also been gazed off.

Perfect effin Storm. No rain, no neonic seed coating. Beet growing too slowly to grow away from damage. Been in the ground a month and have two true leaves about 1/2 cm long and struggling.

At this rate it will be the last year for beet and OSR here. Just can't afford to continue losing money on it. A lot of work for very little.

Did not know that.

Years ago when I had time for a bit of veg gardening, flea beetle were often a problem in a dry spring. So I suppose it's not a new problem. Back then I think we used Derris dust.

I think we are only just learning how many pests neonic seed coatings held off. Not just aphids in the case of beet.

It is particularly unfortunate that we are faced with difficult weather conditions due to climate change (possibly) and at same same time treatments to mitigate that risk are withdrawn.

It would make a change if the government actually did something to help us with climate change rather than just put extra problems in our way.

Why aren't we building more reservoirs for starters? Why not divert greening money to such projects?
