Strike risk remains high
NADIS, in collaboration with Elanco, have once again launched the blowfly risk alert to help farmers and prescribers keep up-to-date and stay aware of the blowfly challenge throughout the season. Elanco encourages farmers and prescribers to report a case of strike on the blowfly tracker to help others be aware of the risk in their local area and across the country.
Professor Richard Wall from Bristol University comments "Strike risk will be approaching its seasonal peak as we go through August, but the observed levels of strike will be highly weather dependent. Wet sheep are more susceptible to strike, but flies are less likely to lay eggs in cooler windy weather. So, once the current spell of cool unsettled weather ends as predicted towards the middle of August, higher strike incidences are to be expected and increasing vigilance is required."
Shepherds should remain vigilant for clinical signs and please report any cases of fly strike on the Elanco Blowfly Tracker www.farmanimalhealth.co.uk/tracker, or on our website https://alerts.nadis.org.uk
