With the inflationary pressures we are currently seeing, fixing a price or accepting a contract offer for a year in advance is madness...
Farmers wanted it - if they didn't why did so many sign up?
I would think 100% of growers who signed up like ourselves expected prices to be reasonable both input and output . Recently inflation has more than moved the goal posts. Like cf fertilisers we should all throw our hands in the air claim force majeore and seek divine intervention

I would not grow sugar beet on principle. BS are in a monopoly position and it shouldn't be allowed.
BS should supply the seed, supply the sprays and fertiliser and pay you payment for the crop of X per acre and a bonus payment just for the grief involved.

The fieldsman at the time openly told me that there own grown beet averaged 10 or 15%(can't remember exactly now)less than factory averages for that area!!!!!I hear theyre back in the game renting and growing beet themselves........I hope they get on better than last time they were doing it

Well I’m growing it next year. This land needs break crops. Who knows how long the cereals price rise will last?

I'm like you @Dr wazzock we need a break and they work but this year's price increase has only really ment that the beet price has stood still when the cost of everything else has been factored in.

I'm not in any rush to fill in my contract offer by 28th November.
With grain prices looking good, feel like cutting down on my acres of beet. Still got a year left of some tonnage on a 3 year deal.
Also factory only just starting to improve processing. Going to be a long season, just see how it pans out first.

You think you are doing alright till it dawns on you it will take the first three loads sent in to clear the seed invoice.
I have 25 loads total to send in eventually. Dare say the last five loads will be the profit. Puts it into perspective. 20 loads of beet is paying everybody else involved.

It’s the sheer amount of work and wear and tear that gets me with beet. I’m sure my haulier does better out of it than I do. He trundles it down to Newark and I pay him a month later. He grosses 20% of the crops value for doing that.
