2130 problems

My 2130 has been playing up, I had an idiot on it in the summer who boiled it, as it's been loosing water somewhere. Suspect headgasket, but anyway started it up yesterday and it dies as soon as the engine comes under load like no fuel but then instantly restarts with no priming? Is there a gauze in the lift pump? can't be air if it restarts, not tried anything yet just looking for pointers for a go today.
