Does anyone run a 2wd JD2140 with a mounted straw chopper or spreader? Would it be capable of running one for large squares? Want mounted for manoeuvrability and ease of use. I suppose whilst we are at it, what would people recommend for bedding pigs up?

Used to years ago with a Kidd 5'6" round bale chopper. No weights on the front meant steering by brakes with the wheels near the back wheels of the tractor providing a stop for the nose rising too high.
Would think it would struggle with a square bale hanging off the back in a chopper even with weights. Not sure it would even lift it to be honest. The hydraulics on these tractors are a funny design. Either it will lift the weight or it gives up and looks like it doesn't even try. I doubt whether a 2wd 2140 has the optional high lift capacity linkage that is most commonly seen on the later 2850 models

Ummmm?

Mounted straw blower plus bale, roughly 2.5 tonnes

Deere 2140 2wd roughly 3.5 tonnes

The only thing that's going to be lifted, if anything at all, is going to be the front wheels ?

Does no one make a trailer bedder with a steering axle yet ?

??

Don't think there's really going to be much of a market? Lucas do a semi mounted with a fixed axle and pivoting drawbar onto the lower arms.

Just how tight is a steading if you need a mounted or steering axle bedder?

Had a Lucas mounted straw chopper on demo and when you put a 120x90 bale it made the JD 6506 with full front weights light on the front. No chance on a 2wd 2140
I bought a trailed McHale and its surprising how manoeuvrable it is. Not a problem to be honest ....... as long as you can recverse :p

It is much easier to reverse something with a forced steering axle.
I have contemplated swaping the one on my kuhn bedder for a scrap axle off a reekie destoner (its never actually going to happen). Be easier to reverse down our narrow passage when i need to.

Thanks for the replies. It is just that I have a 2140 in the back of the shed and it would give it a reason to be used. I have a 4440 as well that doesn’t do much but don’t want that near the pigs. So I think it may be a trailed machine then. Thought I was being a little optimistic tbh.

Not sure about a 2140 but I used to have quite a lightweight by todays standards straw chopper on the back of a 3050 with no weights and much to the kids amazement you could pick the front of the tractor up with one hand when there was a full straw bale in it ! However I believe you can get a castor wheel kit for many mounted machines to overcome this problem
