you can’t tell the profit from over the fence I understand that but when you see animals in poor states land having nothing done in the way of looking after fences or drains or inputs and stuff been taken off I’m sorry but they are terrible farmers if they can’t look after the land or the animals they have no business doing it

That's the future under ELMS, maybe they are ahead of the game? What you, or I, might consider looking after it, others might consider environmental vandalism...

Isn’t

Yes a hobby is fine but they shouldn’t be calling it a business I’ve plenty of hobby’s and I’m sure none make me a penny
There you go some folk pay a fortune for their hobby, just think those that keep a few cows for a hobby and just about break even are getting their hobby for nothing, what a bargain that is isnt it

Is for them but it makes it harder for the folk who aren’t doing it as a hobby

And yet they help "proper farmers" by spreading the overhead costs of merchants, fitters, AI, marts, fuel suppliers, vets. List goes on. Maybe there is an increase in price on straw/feed, but likewise there wouldn't be such a good part ex market for 2nd hand gear being traded in

In well aware how the system works but how the hell can you comment on here calling out other people’s systems when yours is not just slightly unproductive it’s an enormous financial drain how is cost of production 150 percent if you don’t feed and the cattle stay out either a lot are dropping dead or your not telling the full truth on your inputs

Agree, I thought it must’ve been a typo so didn’t comment, but shocked now it’s confirmed to be honest.

I didn’t read he was producing at a loss I read he got 600 for his calves and his cop was 150 ? Say minus tags haulage commission £400 net , I bet that’s more than some top price fat cattle net proffit .
gotta pull you up there @Hilly - but thanks for your empathic views.
I think I said c.o.p is 150% of gross sales - trying to pluck a number.*
Therefore, if I gross £60k sales, I'm losing £30k in currency on cattle operations, not counting my time.

*it's hard to put a figure in the inputs/profit loss, as I (or any of you) might decide to renew half the knackered old gear in the yard, half the buildings, and up the fence budget by tens of thousands at any moment.
Just the morass of write down values does my head in.
As i've admitted elsewhere, I use such shifting sands as an accounting tool most years.
(it's not 'evasion', just management)

And for @Cowmansam ... I didn't inherit much of anything. Succeeding a good AHA tenancy has been the backbone of my good fortune...which i acknowledge was a very fine stroke of circumstance.
As for subsidised dinosaurs...don't fall into the trap of thinking, because I cruise my farming on a light touch to maximise profit, that I'm not capable of sound practise. I'd never claim to be as good a farmer as many around me, but equally, I'm cutting my cloth according to what suits right now.

there is that side of it but directly in sales they supress the price

You make a good point though, that as long a people in the U.K. continue to drink milk, there will be cattle to feed, though they might not be the sort of cattle we all like to look at. Definitely there will always be a demand for a decent terminal bull to go over them.

I can see a demand for dairy bred calves that have the breeding to be able to finish off mostly forage being a much better option financially and if the trend with sexed semen use continues the price for calves will go down not so good for dairy men but good for the beef man I don’t think it’s there yet as the markets seem to want an animal that looks a bit nicer but takes a lot more rearing
