2nd and 3rd wheats

Always had a varied rotation in the past so never grew these until last year. Grew Shabras second wheat last year, latitude dressing, 50kg/ac, drilled 27/9. Two fields had issues with slugs and frit fly and did 3.1t/ac and the other did 3.4t/ac. When do people using latitude normally drill and if using other dressing (or not) when do you drill. No black grass, so early drilling not a problem. Have Zyatt or Shabras available hss, will probably favour the Zyatt at a higher seed rate to compensate for less tillering.

In this instance the chemical is enhancing the activity of the roots rather than attacking the fungus, so again, delayed drilling will enhance performance further. Delayed drilling reduces Take-all activity by slowing it down (lower soil temperature) and reducing the quantity of live trash where the fungus would be hiding in a viable state.

Thanks for that. On fairly heavy soils here so like to drillas soon as can after mid September. Anybody used vibrance duo for take All?

Is vibrance duo not another sdhi ? With all the worry of using sdhi over efficacy etc not sure where a dressing like that fits into a wheat rotation ..

Is it better to plough for a 2nd wheat to bury the trash and reduce take all and eyespot risk. In which case should I plough as soon as possible after harvest and plant as late as practical to give maximum time for the soil to rest

Ploughing for trash burial I understand but what are you saying about the soil resting? Plenty of people plough and combi drill in the same field.

I mean get it ploughed asap so the trash is getting broken down straight away thus reducing the take all risk.

Interesting what you say. I've heard a few olden's say about modern farming and not letting the land "rest" I've always taken it to mean leaving the land bare for a good while between crops , which is the opposite of modern thinking regards cover crops and always having something growing on the land.

Regards take all. We haven't seen it for years, we plough and drill in October and don't bother with any dressing especially the likes of latitude.
Plenty of residual fertility and early spring N also help a lot.

We normally sumo dts every thing but last year we ploughed for our second wheats at 9” deep. Only fields we had take all in was where we had ploughed . It has put me off ploughing as I feel the roots were lazy in rooting compared to dts drilled crops

If it works stick with it!
I’ve heard this theory and tried it & it didn’t work for me!
I’ve got a few fields that will not grow a second wheat as the organic matter is too high, doesn’t matter if I use latitude drill late early n double roll etc etc, so these go into barley instead now, still pretty heavy though
Cheers dh

I normally just use spd, tried latitude before & didn’t notice any difference here but late drilling (oct) anyway.
As can’t plough here this year and fields aren’t bad for blackgrass have sumo triod & pressed instead.
I did try vibrance duo on some first wheat this time & didn’t see any difference to spd yield wise but am probably going to try some in the second wheat slot this time to see?
Yes happy with second wheats here , not as good as firsts obviously but still worth doing in the right heavy not bad blackgrass fields
Cheers dh

Thanks for that. Tempted to try some vibrance duo and try and be patient and drill a little later.
