2nd hand towing vehicle. Whats still going at higher mileage?

Our old Subaru Forrester workhorse is coming to the end of its life and am starting to think about replacing it. I am looking in the region of £4k - £7k. Ideally a 3t or more towing capacity, a hi/low range gearbox and basically reliable. I am currently looking at older landcruisers, discovery 3s and naravaras. I understand that a landcruiser at that price is not likely, people hate discoverys, and navaras seem to rot.
I would be interested to hear people's thoughts and suggestions.
Cheers

Many people love Discoveries - they just hate the reliability!

We have an old Trooper - dull and thirsty, but utterly reliable (shouldn't have said that....)

This is my 2002 Defender this morning, allways overfull of tools and still going strong.

But you have to love them, it is a Triggers Broom with second hand parts such as another engine, gearbox and transfer box etc etc. I do replace those with second hand as I am pretty guaranteed that those will only have done half the mileage mine has done plus it's a lot cheaper

hilux surf , 3L , 3rd gen diesel same as landcruiser colorado under the shell ,(2nd gen is bad for head issues and hard to work on ) half the road tax than LC , can get a fresh one off the boat from japan on the road for money you want to spend, and fresh underseal (importer in Bristol ) , they do space miles if looked after , perfect towing truck

We are looking for similar been to see a Toyota hilux for 6 and a half and it was full of rust. Come to the conclusion we need to spend 10 grand on something decent will be cheaper in the long term

Defenders are fine if you're under 5'6" tall, deaf and have no right arm...

Sold our 08 plate 90, there was always something wrong with it.

I had a 03 ranger was bombproof and I properly abused it but there’s one engine that’s good and one that’s bad and you need to make sure which one chap in the village had the other and blew it 3 times wasn’t nice to tow any real weight though wasn’t geared low enough always having to drop into the low box

The thing with a Defender if you want to live with one is to plaster the inside with noise insulation, change the seats and move them towards the centre by an inch or so. Then keep some weight in the thing, improves the ride no end.
