Have a look at this video, that just happened to pop up on my YouTube feed today, that explains it all quite graphically.

Very Interesting, what i cannot find out though is how to stop the slip.. is it give it some revs and keep stopping when in a traffic jam rather than roll along slowly at tickover?

Yes. It should be obvious when mechanical drive takes over and slip ends, because the ratio between engine and wheels will then be constant. Rolling along at tickover is not a problem as long as the clutch is fully engaged, which is probably at around 4mph or so.
