Been going through a deal on a new machine with a dealer. He has one in stock new and unused however plated 2018 so in my mind 2 yrs old already. Obviously he says to order a newly built one this year will be more expensive but can't get out of my mind that if say in 5yrs I was to trade it in it would look like 7yrs old going by the plate. What would you do?

The last fert spreader I had was brand new to us in 09 and I know it was because it was picked up with a new tractor but when we sold it it was an 08 build therefore worth a bit less

He's had it in stock for two years now and not managed to sell it, tell him he needs to sharpen that pencil a bit more if he wants it off his books.

Dealers tend to stock-order implements for the next year in late Autumn and may well get machines for 2019 sale built at the end of 2018. That's just the way it is.
If it is not a particularly complex piece of equipment that has been superseded or very much modified at the factory subsequent to this one, it shouldn't make much difference after three or four years of use. The condition of the machine will be far more important.

It can make a difference, no doubt, in some cases and even for tractors. A near neighbour bought an used tractor a few years ago, from a reputable dealer, and subsequent to some repair being needed they found that the serial number was for a tractor three years older than the registration number suggested. They made a fuss and got their money back. You can't really blame the dealer in that case, because they would have no easy access to a different brand of tractor's serial number significance and the farmer was quite happy with what he got for the money until this was found.

Who'd be a machinery dealer? Not me. It's a minefield.

I bought a new mower last year that had bean sat in the dealers yard for two years wrapped in plastic and have just bought a fert spinner which is new but will be 3 years old this year. Both were around 20-25% cheaper than new with full warranty and were the models I actually wanted anyway which was a bonus! I would not be to concerned about second hand values as you will get a delivery document and invoice with dates on for proof, condition is the most important factor.

Has the spec of the machine in question changed in the last two years? Some updates are worth having, others you can do without. If the price and the spec are right and you get an invoice with the serial number saying either new or shop soiled on whatever date in 2020 then I don't see any reason not to buy it. In 5 years time the condition will determine its value more than its age.

Be aware that implements that may require testing (sprayers/spreaders) require their 1st test based on the date of manufacture, not the date it arrived on your farm.

Spec not really changed other than new control box- smaller and neater

I had this back in June. Asked for a brand new rake, dealer had one at their other depo, not even built, went to see it, plated 2016. Sorry, but I couldn't have that.

The way I looked at it was say for whatever reason I wanted to change it after 2 or 3 years, to anyone else it would be a 6 year old machine but I would only have had 3 years use out of it but would be stomaching 6 years worth of depreciation. I would be met with a ''Pull the other one'' if I had argued I had it in 2019

Asked about it, explained my side, price would still be the same, so I requested a new 2019 plated machine. Wasn't an issue luckily. But with the way the job is and how expensive this kit is and the fact it's going to have to stick around for longer I need to look after myself first.

Might be in the market for a new wag tail next spring, I could probably live with that being plated 2 or 3 year old as it would be here probably forever and as long as it was reflected in the price.
