3 crop rule

There was talk of not having a 3 crop rule this autumn is it happening or nor

I suspect that rule will be binned in a fanfare announcement from DEFRA when we finally cast off the shackles of the EU and can implement our very own gold plated rules instead. It will make very little difference to the majority of farms, but will be trumpeted as UK gov looking out for us. Hurrah for Boris.?

In the unlikely event the transition period is extended, I guess we will have to abide by EU rules for BPS for another year.

Assume the 3 crop rule is still in force for the time being until told otherwise IMO.

Playing devil's advocate, growers ought to have a good crop rotation therefore this should not be a troublesome question. But I do understand that some mixed farmers only want a few fields of corn for home feed & get caught out by this rule originally designed to avoid miles upon miles of monoculture in Eastern Germany.

It does make me wonder if it wouldn't have been better to solve this potential problem by attempting to make other crops more competitive, and thus solve by the market for growers wanting to grow more than one crop, rather than forcing them to.

It's also ironic that the EU efforts almost make things worse rather than better - banning neonics won't have helped the competitiveness of OSR/sugar beet for example.

It was abandoned in Wales this year. 6 months after I ordered seed. And a good month after I'd sowed crops in the spring.
I suspect these rules are set in stone now. Best we can hope for is that new daft rules are not implemented with quite the same feverish rate as under the EU.

its the thresholds that hurt the smaller or livestock farms rather than the rule itself

You do realise that it’s been the UK govt that have chosen to implement those rules in all their glory, even gold plating many of them, whereas many European govts have chosen a more lax interpretation of the same rules?
I would suggest that to expect our lot to relax any rules/regulations/red tape (call it what you will) is optimistic, at best.

The enemy, at least as far as Ag is concerned, is in Westminster, not Brussels.:(

I beg to differ with you there, our lot only gold plate because they fear the fines imposed by Brussels! Do you honestly think that any UK government would of come up with the 3 crop rule for a problem that didn’t affect here. The biggest problem is with who decides the idiotic rules in the first place not how they are implemented

What are the percentages for the 3 crop rule?
This is for Wales, don't know if it's the same for England...

It’s not hard to understand surely, but our own civil servants have had a damned good job of making it look complicated, as only civil servants know how.:banghead: It would be incredibly naive to think that was going to change just because they have to translate edicts from Westminster, rather than from Brussels.

It would have been easy enough to have had an exemption for those under 200 ha. Mainly mixed farms at that size anyway. And just a simple 3 crops rule for those above. I can't see that anyone would have bothered to bend the rules by just growing 10 acres of one crop, and if they did, so what ?
It's the fact that the EU treated farmers as criminals from the word go that annoys me most. Yet ironically, the Mafia were allowed to cream off millions. But I digress.......
