30ft bays

Thinking ahead I will have a need to make one bay of a shed 30ft wide for access reasons. Is this possible? The rest would then be 15ft in-line with the rest.

Quite easily possible. We’ve done 40ft bays
Just needs a carrier beam between stanchions 30ft apart

Excellent. How does it then work with purlins? Assume these then have to be z’s do they need to be beefed up? And how would you calculate the beam size?

No you would still have a rafter just would be bolted to carrier beam instead of a stanchion. I assumed you just wanted a 30ft opening/ doorway

Ah yes ofcourse that makes far more sense now. Yes it was only the door way that needed to be 30ft. Excellent Thankyou for clairfying that.

We’ve just gone 45ft with carrier beams so we could put new shed up over the top of old parlour building

We have 2 X 30' bays over our collecting yard behind the parlour and also a 30' bay over the front of the parlour which joins another 30' bay over the front of one of the silage clamps.

I can't remember the z purlin size but they are big !
Also we use a substantial box section as eaves beam and obviously box profile roof not fibre cement

quite common for sheds here to be built with 12m bays or wider, just costs more $$$ for extra engineering / steel . . .

We also don't need the cyclone ratings that they need further north of us

Did a 300 foot shade shed for cows years ago. All 30 foot wide bays. 2.0mm x 200mm c section purlins.. Same in my machinery shed. One 30 foot bay and one 26 foot with a 5 m high sliding door.

As been mentioned your snow loading calculations will be eeeerrrrm slightly different down your way!! ? ? ?
