As my colleague has just pointed out, it is only those who can afford to eat out anyway will be benefiting from this taxpayer largesse. The poor will still be sat at home, as even a half price meal is out of their reach.
Lets ram the pubs out, and then in a week or so announce that the pubs need to shut to get the schools back....this country is run by bumbling idiots.

My local has never been so busy. New couple took it on in in Feb. Locked down in March but absolute stormed it with takeaways.

Now averaging 150 meals a day- up from the pre Covid average of 80 with the last landlord. He was no slouch either!

Went out for a "catch up with friends" meal last Thursday, for dessert we all decided on the Lemon cheesecake, only to be informed that they
were out of cheesecake because they had taken orders for a shade over 2 thousand the previous two days. For the record, there were 4 choices
for dessert.

South Somerset has had 0 hospitlal cases for a while, lockdown on a local level seems the way to go. I for one am happy to go to my local with the procedures we have in place its far removed from having the pub rammed, I actually feel safer there than the local farm shop /cafe which is at weekends absolutey "rammed" !!

I wasn't saying don't go to the pub, I love going to the pub, we go every Thursday teatime as a quasi-religious commitment, like you I feel safe in the pub, safe from lots of things beside corona.
I was questioning the logic and morals of the taxpayer throwing money at the middle classes going to the pub this week, then according to the scenarios talked about for getting the schools back clamping down again on the pubs next week.

And why not,

There will be a bigger demand for farm produce, is that not a good thing then :scratchhead:

Government do a half price deal on bread and milk, more free fruit and veg for primary schools, etc ? Crack on, helps farmers and helps the poor.
Half price deals on chicken corma for the chattering classes ? Nah.

I see it as a valid way of kick starting the economy and on the face of it it seems to be working. I tried, last weds to book a table for myself and my 2 daughters.... there was not a table free within a 3 mile radius! Will they clamp down on pubs, I suspect not. That is possibly hyped up by the media, of which I know little.... I don't read any papers nor do I entertain any television news channels!
Any clamping down I suspect will be on a local level as we have seen demonstrated ooppp North.

The key to covid is to use your brains , both the guest and the proprietor, problem is there are weak links .
Blaming the govt is pathetic . don't get me started on A level results .
