3litre or 2.5 litre toyota hilux?

I have a vehicle which is not really suitable for pulling our 12 ft cattle box with finished bullocks in when selling them, as does not have enough pulling power (a large panel van). I am presuming something like a toyota Hilux would be a far better bet? I have a 10 year old one in mind. It is a 2.5 litre model, i notice you can get a 3 litre one .Is this( the 2.5 litre) big enough to pull the 12 ft ivor with 2 finished cattle in.That weight seems to take them up to their payload .I know people put more in , but most of mine go on hauliers lorry but a couple a month finish out of time with others and we like to take them when they are ready) It is quite hilly round are way and pretty power draining on hills, with van i get down to 15/ 20 mph.Which is a bit stressful with pee'd of cars behind.With that i can barely get up some hills on route.So been thinking we would like something more suited for job, Any thoughts appreciated from other farmers using hilux s especially whether a 2.5 litre is big enough? Thank you

If it’s only a few trips wouldn’t you be better stick the cattle box behind the tractor and keep the van

I bought a 3lt v6 navara D40 ,,its an auto box and towing 3 tn is a doddle ,doesnt know its got it .
Im thinking of getting it remapped ,,garage says it could go to 280bhp from 231

Why a hilux? They normally have the lowest power output of all the pickups, and the driving position on a 10 year old one is horrid, especially if you’re coming from a van.( The seat isn’t that high off the floor, so your legs are extended further forward than a normal vehicle, or indeed any other pickup)
Any pickup will pull the trailer, but hard to know if it will be any better than your van, without knowing the area. Best is to get a test drive with your loaded trailer on

Hilux at 10 year old was also left behind in legal towing capacity by the majority of rivals as well.

Mate drives for a slaughter house got l200 hiluxs an navara there trucks are running all day every day with a trailer on navara is nicest to spend a day in but there always breaking and the l200 are a bit gutless so he prefers the hiluxs

They are doing like 100000 thousand a year towing though so will be working far harder than usual

hi ,I bought a 2012 2.5 3 weeks ago,I went to buy a 3 ltr but found the 2.5 plenty good as regards power ,the 2.5 is way easier on diesel and while I didn't pull my 12 ft cattle trailer I have no worries ,I would imagine going up a hill that you would have to change down gears a bit quicker,jbut all in all a lovely jeep

Thank you ,only because I,v found good hilux with full service history but if its not the right vehicle then i will leave it.good idea to test drive loaded.

I would be really interested to know how you get on when you start moving some cattle around.What hp is that 2.5 litre? are all the 2.5 litres the same hp?
