Hi folks.
Got some combi drilling todo for a new customer and wondering about how to price it. He wants a set price and is saying that he normally pays £25 an acre. I’ve told him fuel is ridiculous and parts are a lot of money now so it’s going to be more than that.
Fields are 5-8 acre on a hill slopping all directions so not easy to get a nice job done.
so the question is what are people charging in this situation?
I think it will drink a full tank to do 30 acre on a 200hp tractor including travel.
Many thanks

The man is 78 and had a man with a 6m claydon I think he said and he charged him 25 in October and drilled 60 acre in 4 hour with a 8330 fastrac. I was thinking 38 for the messing about and stuff and fuel being ridiculous but got a feeling he is going to bark at that

Don’t bother doing it then…

Do you drive with the markers in the centre of the tractor? If so when your on slopes go off the hitch passing the mark and not the badge on the bonnet and you won’t be far out at all

You work out what it will cost you, add on the margin you want and then put the figure to the customer. If he thinks that is too much, you don't do the job. You're not running a charity- it's as simple as that !

If he doesn’t like the price you want to charge, don’t do the job. Save the hassle

Yeah he just asked for it combination drilling as I don’t think he’s got on with the claydon and mr claydon can’t get to him. I’m not bothered about doing it I just thought if he agrees to pay the set rate I’d go and do it but it not and I don’t think he is going to then it’s not my issue. Is anyone else struggling with farmers who don’t want to pay the increased cost with how the job has turned?

Get a calculator and calculate your costs divided by the number of hours you reckon it will take.

If the man who is 78 and had a guy in with a 6m claydon thinks your figure is too high then he can get the man with the 6m claydon back and have him drill the crop.

Too many people in the industry need to wake the fudge up. A combi drill is nothing like a fudging claydon. Is £750 enough for an entire day of your time?

Well this was today in stiff clay that had been ploughed, cultipressed twice, 4metre power Harrow and drill around 7 acres hr, I have a Claydon but not suitable here so no comparison on fuel / price charge what you need too.

Not sure what contractors are charging this year.
I run a 3m Amazone combi with front hopper blowing back fert on a 150HP New Holland. We drill some steep stuff, some hard clay, peat, bit of everything, mostly behind a plough and press, headlands are levelled for me.
My rough rule of thumb is 7litre/ac of diesel on the drill tractor, more if its tough, less if its easy or worked.
If the old lad is sticking on price give him the option of supplying fuel, and reduce rate accordingly. End result is the same to him but it feels cheaper as the fuel cost isn't seen the same.

Tbh running a claydon isn't cheap, still sups the hp, the leading tines are horrific money and don't last that long either.
Anyone doing claydon drilling for £25/acre needs to check the costs. Not just running, but replacement too, that's so often neglected.
