Why do you need a 200hp monster on a 3m combi?

I always thought you want 20-23 for running cost on top of your fuel cost to be honest just to pay wages, servicing and abit for replacement machine etc but with how it is now with machines being more i think it wants to be 26 plus fuel now. It’s a Kuhn combi lc3000 I run and not cheap on parts. A new version will be 45k I bet now

Someone who has recently bought a new 3m combi drill can no doubt tell us what it cost to buy and how many acres they will generally get out of one?

Slightly more helpfully, if the man won't pay what you need, let him find someone else to work for nothing.
The fact that he is 78 just means that he has probably had the good fortune to farm through some good times, far more bountiful than thee or me will likely ever see.

Reading this thread has made me realise how far backwards we would appear to have gone if these modern combis are so power hungry.
Would be interesting to know whether it's the drills that take more driving or the modern horse power that is so poor.
Have drilled plenty with a 3m combi on sub 100hp. Not arguing that you would want a bit more on hills.

Its all about forward speed
100 hp is fine on flat overwintered ploughing going slow
These combos are also far heavier so 100 hp wouldnt even lift them

Think it just emphasises the different soils etc that we contend with.
My picture above is 3m Kuhn, pulling 4.5 kmh up a brow, working 100mm deep behind 125hp.

Exactly, I use to run a 4m rigid combi on a 125hp tractor and cover 25ac on a good day. Now it’s a 4m folding on 255hp tractor, that 125hp tractor wouldn’t even pick it up! But I’ll cover 50+ ac a day.

Had mine on the dyno while putting the hydraulic front tank fan on and off, it took 9 hp to drive the fan, and a 4m folding combie has 3 gearboxs to drive.

Yep, 255hp on 4m here. Takes a bit of bashing this stuff and it’s already been knocked down once.

It can be so deceptive. That doesn't look so bad in front of you at all. Manage with 125HP here on 3m mixed soils but mostly flat. Speed can be as slow as 5k but normally 7-8 occasionally up towards 10. It would be better on 150. Have a front press and eradicators on PH try not to have it in any deeper than necessary.
