3mw Biomas boiler

That’s a serious boiler.

It’s obviously heating something substantial.

Thought about 2 smaller boilers?

I think with stuff like this I'd try and find someone who has had a similar product for a while and see if they can recommend a company.

I help with a 1MW boiler, and the installation company, and in fact even the boiler manufacturer aren't that helpful.

Need two boilers that size. Thanks for the link have you used this company?

I had a biomass boiler off them, that I ran for 9 years. Had to upgrade for various reasons.
But I could more a less call John at anytime (weekends etc) and he would also help me out.
It was a small boiler, but excellent quality and was going to buy same again, but bigger.
But John talked me out of it because I wanted to get emission certificate on it for class A waste wood.
He said it would be difficult to get it to pass because of it's simple nature.

He doesn't officially sell that boiler brand anymore, but still got me any parts I needed.

John from Core Biomass is a really nice guy, who will always give an honest opinion on a project.
If he thinks it's unrealistic or something is not right, he'll say and is quite prepared to not make a sale if he thinks it won't work out.

Most sales guys I've dealt with just say they can do it all, then when a problem appears the cracks start to show.

I believe the Justen boilers he sells now are top notch and are made upto 20MW.

I would look at installing several smaller boilers and designing the load into flexible zones so if one goes down you don’t loose the lot.

Where abouts in the world are you? I would get someone like FEC involved, at this level figures incorrect by just a few % is an eye watering amount of energy / cost.

I’m running nearly a 1/3 rd of your required output, yours will be a v interesting project! I would be happy to quote you on insulated pipe or heaters :)

Anyone able to recommend a biomass (wood chip) boiler company for 3 Mw boiler?

3 x 1mw Linka boilers all sat next to each other fed by a concrete walled on floor fuel feeder. Basically you tip the fuel up in bulk and just keep pushing it up to the auger system sunk into a small pit. It works very well and you can make the space of the hopper as big as you like so could tip up hundreds of tonnes in front of it as long as you can keep pushing it up with a grain pusher or something similar. I’ve seen one working and it’s spot on.

I don’t think anyone should be putting boilers in anymore and RHI needs stopping. All these big boilers are ruining it for us small guys because there creating a shortage of wood and price is getting silly now. I predict I will be shutting my 200kw log boiler down in 2 years because wood will be more expensive than the oil I used to use and the oil didn’t require any labour to burn it!

Log boiler!? Ive had 150t tipped here FOC in the last 4 months. Guess it depends on geography?

If you were on chip then I’d agree more strongly

Yes I’m on chip. What sort of wood do you get free? Is it ready to chuck in or does it need work preparing it. Only stuff I’ve ever found free was a skip load of a demolished house and you needed some way of picking it up with telehandler and tipping in boiler otherwise every piece was to do my hand and it was just messy stuff. Then there were al the nails to clean out after burning! Just tried a 4x4 bale of rape straw but as usual loads of ash left. Might have to invest in an ejector bucket for loading boiler [emoji41]

You said a log boiler but you need chip? What boiler have you got, what is your tarrif currently?

I take any thing that’s free and then use a digger to split it down, I burn chip, logs and straw. Bought an ejector bucket this year to load chip with, not cheap but the RHI cheque alone will cover its cost in 3 months so worth the investment.

Sorry I meant chip wood not wood chip meaning I buy cheap softwood in 3 meter lengths. I have same as you I think, a D20. I’m on highest tariff of nearly 9 pence. Which ejector bucket did you get and what’s it like at burning wood chip?

Ok, so you have a batch boiler with a v high tarrif level so you should be able to get about £24k per annum? You are far better of than most. I spend about 2-3k per annum on fuel but I also sell the heat so it works very well for me. Buying cordwood is an expensive job!

I can burn wood chip in mine but I can dry it myself. I take wood of any shape and process it with a cone splitter, costs about 1p a kWh, straw is a bit cheaper but leaves a bit more ash and smoke.

Speak to your local tree surgeons and see if you can have a deal with them. Trouble is getting the logs dry, stuff I had in January is about 20% now.

I did the rounds with push of buckets, company in Scotland and cherry were the best 2, I went for cherry which works well. I had them tweak the head stock connections with some angle to give me more slant when moving about the yard.

What are you doing with the heat?

I can get 20k on the first tariff before it drops off so I just aim for that. Spending about 7k on larch but it’s the time to process it that kills it. Might go for the Scottish bucket. Saw it at highland show and looked well built. Are they similar on price? All the heat goes into a large old house and heats water for milking robots and bulk tank wash

Ok, that’s a lot of time and money as you say.

What can you burn on your certificate? Straw may be a cheaper option if you have shed space? Assume you are livestock only so can’t dry any chip?

What do you use to process it? If you can get a supply of logs off tree surgeons you may find that helps soften the bill.

The cherry was heavier and a touch cheaper so in my mind the stronger of the two.
