Why is your friend not going to farm it himself going forward?
I don’t understand why it would be considered. Driving an 80 mile round trip to do a couple of loads of spray at the most (3 crop rule on 400 acres) is madness.Timing of spraying and fert critical, why let a contractor do one of most time critical jobs, and as a contractor, best paying jobs.
True, when you put it like that.I don’t understand why it would be considered. Driving an 80 mile round trip to do a couple of loads of spray at the most (3 crop rule on 400 acres) is madness.
Unless he can claim entitlements on his SP5, then he can mono crop itI don’t understand why it would be considered. Driving an 80 mile round trip to do a couple of loads of spray at the most (3 crop rule on 400 acres) is madness.
If he rents it he can. But how can you say you will always want to crop that 400 acres with the same thing? It’s not worth it, 40 miles is a ridiculously long way.Unless he can claim entitlements on his SP5, then he can mono crop it
Do you do much contract farming or renting?I agree with the distance but if there is a chance it might work then it must be mono cropped, (nothing stopping him with continuous wheat) assuming it rented.
The OP already farms 2900 acres so i'm sure he has crop blocks bigger than 400 acres.
Then you should know that 400 acres 40 miles away is a ridiculous waste of time. It would be hard to justify if it was owned by the OP!We have a mixture of owned, rented and CFA
As someone in a similar situation to you I would not take it on mainly due to the amount of time and focus it would take away from you’re current setup. If you had 400 acres acres would you get someone from 40 miles away to look after and manage it?It would be a cfa so 3 crops needed, or maybe 2 because I think he has some grass there that he gets the payment on. The owner isn’t a farmer, the chap who was doing it before has given up ( or been pushed, not sure).
I thought there might more people on here farming land a long way away. Spending my life on the road isn’t the most appealing proposition but with modern gear it doesn’t take that long to get across the land. Either way I am going to have a meeting with him about it soon. Reading most replies here has just confirmed to me that it is likely to not be worth the hassle.
Maybe, but I wouldn't instantly discount it over distance, for example, if all A roads and no towns to get though then it could be do-able with prior planning. Not saying OP should do it but look at it in-the-roundThen you should know that 400 acres 40 miles away is a ridiculous waste of time. Perhaps if he was only doing 400 acres already but he said he’s doing 2900 so enough on his plate already.Maybe, but I wouldn't instantly discount it over distance, for example, if all A roads and no towns to get though then it could be do-able with prior planning. Not saying OP should do it but look at it in-the-round
