400 acres, 40 miles away.

I’m farming the same acerage as you and there is absolutely no way in hell going 40 miles for 500 acres would appeal in any kind of way whatsoever. You would detract massively from you’re current area by trying to do a little bit more. Judging from your posts you know it is the wrong thing to do. Think of all that time on the road. And to be honest I don’t see how getting contractors in to spray and fert is in any way cost effective on a contract farm if you are already carrying the capital of you’re own sprayer anyway.

Just re read one of you’re posts saying you would get fert sprays and possibly combining done by contractors. That’s a lot of money to drag out of the pot that is being split between you and you’re friend (assuming this is a CFA).

I agree with the distance but if there is a chance it might work then it must be mono cropped, (nothing stopping him with continuous cereal) assuming it rented.
The OP already farms 2900 acres so i'm sure he has crop blocks bigger than 400 acres.

Do you do much contract farming or renting?

It would be a cfa so 3 crops needed, or maybe 2 because I think he has some grass there that he gets the payment on. The owner isn’t a farmer, the chap who was doing it before has given up ( or been pushed, not sure).

I thought there might more people on here farming land a long way away. Spending my life on the road isn’t the most appealing proposition but with modern gear it doesn’t take that long to get across the land. Either way I am going to have a meeting with him about it soon. Reading most replies here has just confirmed to me that it is likely to not be worth the hassle.

As someone in a similar situation to you I would not take it on mainly due to the amount of time and focus it would take away from you’re current setup. If you had 400 acres acres would you get someone from 40 miles away to look after and manage it?

Then you should know that 400 acres 40 miles away is a ridiculous waste of time. It would be hard to justify if it was owned by the OP!
Maybe, but I wouldn't instantly discount it over distance, for example, if all A roads and no towns to get though then it could be do-able with prior planning. Not saying OP should do it but look at it in-the-round

Perhaps if he was only doing 400 acres already but he said he’s doing 2900 so enough on his plate already.
