Take its lid off and remove and replace filter after cleaning the housing.
Why they ever fitted it is a mystery to me. The same engines fitted to 5400 didn't have it and later engines and bigger engines like my year 2004 MF7490 don't either.
So if you want you can do away with it by substituting a longer hose from the rocker cover and blanking off the sump drain and the inlet manifold nipples.

Down entirely to emissions regulation again.
No vapour that can contain any hydrocarbons such as traces of oil in vapour form can be released freely from the engine to the atmosphere hence the filter to catch the vapourised oil .
Closed crank ventilation by another name .
Have them on J Deere engine on Claas , if filter blocks you get an increased crank case pressure and engine de rates.

These are stage 2 engines though and open breathers were used right to the end of stage 3 with their common rail, four-valve engines. Indeed the same engines used on different models of the same tractor brand did not have closed breathing system installed. It was not led by legislation or any practical imperative at the time this 6400 series tractor was built.

Neither common rail Perkins or the later Sisu engines fitted to the later and last 6400 series tractors with the newer bonnets had or have the closed breathing system fitted. They just vent to atmosphere in the traditional way.

Its a steel mesh, I washed mine in paraffin, I took it apart as oil vapour blows out of it. It wasn't clogged and it still makes an oily mess down the side of the engine. Don't see the point when 4 cyl tier 2 engines have open breather that causes no problem.

Is it normal to be a mess blowing oil vapour? Engine isn't knackered.
