6cyl major

I have just bought a Fordson major that has had a 6cyl engine fitted. It has no V5 or documentation with it. How do I go about getting it registered for road use? DVLA have been quite unhelpful!
Many thanks

The link is only of use if you know the registration number. I should have been clearer. It has no registration number. No v5. No nothing. Struggling to even find a serial number on the engine anywhere.

Your best route will probably be to consult someone such as the National Vintage Tractor and Engine Club who have a lot of experience of advising owners with very similar registration problems - having no V5C, number plate or serial number for a vintage tractor is not uncommon.

At the very least they will probably be able to help you persuade DVLA to issue an age related registration number, even if the original one for the tractor cannot be identified (or has been re-assigned to another vehicle), and will avoid having to put up with a generic 'Q' plate.

Your experience with DVLA being "quite unhelpful" seems to be perfectly normal!

I gather, if you go through one of the clubs, it might be possible to obtain an age related reg. Is the original tractor number present on the fire wall in front of the battery? You also have all the casting codes which should be close age wise, unless a total bitzer.

Thank you! Good to know I’m not getting special treatment!!

Try this.
Last February, I bought a 1958 MF35. It had no number plate, no documentation, no nothing, BUT, it did have a chassis number.
What I did was to ring DVLA and ask if I could fill in a V62 form ( the one to apply for a log book) and send it without a reg number. The girl said yes, but enclose a covering letter saying what had happened.
So, I filled in all of the form except the reg number. I enclosed a covering letter saying that I had bought it and the number plate had fallen off and the number was unknown. Sent the £25 cheque with the application and waited for the cheque coming back!
Well, let me tell you, the V5c arrived with original reg number no problem . It turned out that it was last taxed in 1980, and the computer hadn't forgotten it.
If it hasn't been on the computer in the first place, this won't work, but give it a try, it might work for you too. What's the worst that could happen?

No that's confusing the issue.

The simple fact is that if that vehicle has a chassis number, and has been taxed any time since DVLA first got a computer 43 years or so ago, then there is a registration number on the computer.

Do what I did, and you'll get it back.
