7.5 ton lorry

Good evening.
Been considering for some time now , the purchase of small truck (flatbed) for bringing tractor & plough to matches and so on.
No big budget so looking at 20 year old or so. Will be only doing approx 1000 miles p.a.
It seems the bulk of them are MAN , Merc , DAF or Iveco.

Anyone got experiences , opinions , tips or advice on these please?

Friend of mine runs a few man tgl he also has a newer iveco and a daf, the man would be my first pick out of the lot although basic it’s practical very easy to manoeuvre and a good used one can be had for sensible money, best bet is get out there and try a few,things I would personally hate you may love. Said friend was mocked mercilessly when he bought his newer iveco recently but it’s great,

I would weigh the tractor and plough first to see what weight the lorry can be.

We ran Cargos for years, fairly reliable and parts no too bad price wise, but like all vehicles do not like being left unused for months at a time as the batteries can get discharged and brakes sieze on, we also ran the older MAN models, parts a bit more expensive but a good reliable truck. Know very little about Mercs or DAF.
Cargos were the most common truck of that size sold so plenty about.

Man will be heavier than the others

Loads of dafs iveco for breaking so lots of used spares

They all will do the job for vintage insurance most have to be 15 years or older.

Yes Man will be slightly heavier, but not a lot in it, and far better lorry by far
Daf are cheap as chips, but will need bit more attention to keep it right, and if stored out doors the disc brakes will rust up and give bother,
I've come tend to be rust boxes in the car floors, and again bit like the Daf,
An old 814 has drug all round, and no electrics to give bother but are getting long on the tooth now,

I also have a Mercedes 814, but with a sleeper cab and night heater.

It is a bit sluggish out of the blocks aand on the hills, but once up to speed it does move, especially as it is not limited.

Winch is a must also.

Insurance can vary. NFU do it for about £100, but I could not get insured as I wasn't an existing customer. I think their policy limits the mileage to 3000. I am currenly with Walker Midgley, its a bit more £200+ on their vintage policy but mileage is 6000.

Breakdown insurance is also recommended. Autohome Ltd at £113 for a year.

MOT can be an issue as you need to ensure that it is booked in well in advance.
