750A Fan motor seals

I think the unthinkable has happened and someone has put pressure to the fan without having the return plugged in. Apparently it’s leaking from a kind of leak off pipe . Is it a big job to put seals in the motor? @Simon Chiles

If it’s started to leak then it’s not long before the trickle of oil becomes a flood. You can reseal the motor but it has varying success rates. It’s normally easier and quicker to fit a new motor. @AF Salers is the expert ( although I don’t think he wanted to be )

Thank you Simon, yes unfortunately i have a bit of experience with the fan motors! I resealed the motor 2 years ago, and then had to replace it last year. And before any one comments on back pressure on the free flow return, i have had a gauge on it for a couple of weeks and it never goes above 0.5 bar, the advised maximum being 5 bar.

Yes the motor can be resealed, though the advice i was given was that you should only reseal the motor once, then replace it. JD have fitted 3 different makes of motor, so far to my knowledge, so you do need to take it off and identify which one you have got on your drill. The seals can be bought from JD as a full kit (£££) or you can get seals from independent seal suppliers obviously. It's not too big a job to get the motor off/on, though i did have to file a wee bit off the splines on my new motor last year as it was too tight a fit on the drill's fan splines.

It's the same motor (& part number) for the motor on some of the Kverneland drills so if JD are struggling to get you a motor and you need one quick it is worth asking your local KV dealer, or going to St Helen's on Merseyside if not too big a distance.

You were a good source of advice when mine went Angus!

I sourced some seals after a good bit of internet searching. They were a tiny fraction of the cost from JD.
Luckily the motor off my KV front hopper is interchangeable with the one on the drill so I could keep going while I found the seals.
They are called lip seals. Take note of which way round they fit when you remove the old one.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Ours is an OT pump which jd parts don’t recognise only giving Bosch and sauer as an option.
it had a spacer seal with an o-ring on its external circumference and a double lip seal. Neither of which the Generic seal guys had. But I have improvised by putting in two single lip seals back to back. To make up the depth Dimensions of which are 18-32-6.5 in case Anyone else needs them. Touch wood it’s worked all day yesterday and no sign of oil so hopefully we in the clear

JD should have the OT pump seal kit on their system. I got my OT seal kit from them, though I did have to push a bit, they had the kits on the shelf at Langar, just not on the computer system!! sounds like they still haven’t put it on their system in the past 2 years

Mine is an OT. I found generic seals. I'll dig out the invoice and post the company details on here.
Someone remind me if I haven't done it in a week or so.

Might want to check into the material the seals are made of. Here are units run mainly in higher temperatures,typically 30s and tractor oil tends to run on the high side so local dealer said there was a seal kit that worked better for this application. I assume your using a case drain on the fan.

Sometimes you will find a seal that’s brown in colour. It denotes high temp/pressure seal.
Had similar issues on a roller drill fan motor. Once we went to these spec I’ve never had another issue....
