Doing a bit of maintenance on my drill today and one area I seem to spend too much time on is this
IMG_1491855588.236900.jpg

I know this drill has had a mod with regards to the shims but how often are users tightening this jaw? Replacing the shims, that get compressed on one edge of the shaft normally takes enough slack out to re tighten them.
Not sure that I'm using the right steel for shims?

It's normal to tighten that bolt at least a couple of times a season.

Have you ever got to the point where it won't pinch up any more Simon? as Clive obviously did on this one. Some of mine won't pinch up properly any more with new shims so I'm thinking I may have to have a new shaft or build slightly with weld and grind flat again.

I think I'd shave a bit more off the end of the shaft and then fit thicker and harder shims rather than trying to build up the shaft, you'd have to remove the shaft whichever option you chose.

We did the shim mod as the shaft faces had worn unevenly, machined the faces flat then added the shim to replace the missing thickness, just normal steel iirc with intention to replace each year as the shims cost pence

New shafts were very expensive iirc
How many acres had the drill done before needing the shims, or was it worn as they hadn't been tightened often enough?

I've just clocked about 2400 acres since april last year, and am finding the discs are now shot and are needing replaced, also the bearings in the gauge wheels (the rubber one) i've got about ten ish, wobbling a bit not alot but abit and also the t bar that adjusts the depth, is slightly elongating the holes that the t bar sit in.
I must stress that the drill has performed great, putting the seed just where i want it in the moisture about 40mm deep, it just needs a little rest, detox and bit of fettling to get it up to speed again, saying that i haven't worn or spent a penny on any cultivation gear so not all bad:)

Do you mean the gauge wheels? If so you ought to shim them out with a washer to take out the play PDQ. If you don't the rim will crack. If the t boot is starting to elongate the holes it sits in is a fairly good indication that the t boot arm needs its bolt tightening where it clamps onto the gauge wheel axle otherwise you'll start to round the flats on the axle. You should be nipping these bolts up ( FT is the torque setting) a couple of times a season. Have you finished spring drilling?

During its "detox" ,you can swap the quadrants from left to right side rather than replacing. This will give you double the life out of them. Replace any t handles with excessive play at the same time.

i've only had the drill 12 months, never thought i would have to be doing this much to it , there seems to be a lot of fiddling to get it perfect and stop bits falling off it, i think the build quality fair to average, but you really have to up your game to play this fiddle properly, it really is like the ferrari of drills, high maintenance but worth it, as the results are tremendous:)

How are we Simon ive read your little book "The dd ers guide to the universe" till i fell asleep last night, yes i do see what you said on page 254 about the little bolt being tightened and getting underneath the dill have now found it as in pic @cows sh#t me to tears.

Yes have got a little bit of barley to do and cover crops for shoot and maybe some one else's barley, but i've seen his ground and not that fussed to do it. i have added a terracast V2 to the back of the drill but having problems getting the pellets to flow through to two venturis am going to experiment with a double feed pipe that splits by the seed entry point to the air flow, then to the two pipes.
