It is silly.

Not really. Openers are for a global market and as you know the world and his wife fit different closing wheels in other countries. It would be very costly for Deere to fit the Guttler wheels as opposed to the standard ones just for the European market. It's not as though it's holding sales back either, they can hardly make them fast enough. No real economic advantage to Deere at all to supply them fitted so why should they bother?

yes was thinking along those lines, would rather it was above the arm though ideally so its dint get in the way of trash flow ?

has to be a better use for them than door stops surely
I think guttlers are to wide , if they were narrower the point of contact with the ground would be closer to the slot and they would have less soil to move to close the slot . Also when the guttlers arm buses are a bit worn the guttlers tracks further from the slot .

Are they really moving soil or shattering disc smeering though ?

If the Guttler's were narrower you'd run the risk of lifting the seeds back out of the ground when seeding shallowly in loose ( cultivated ) or even lighter dd soils. The whole idea of the Guttler closing wheel was for one that could operate in all soil conditions.
If you want a closing wheel that is only going to be used in firmer dd only conditions there are many more on the market, Yetters, Hagny ( HCS ), Thompson etc to name just a few.
I designed the spacing bush that is supplied with the Guttlers to be used in conjunction with the three spacing washers as used on the original closing wheel. If you need to run the Guttler closer to the slot just take the shims out and put the on the other side of the wheel.
