Mid way through a pretty thorough refurb of our drill and I thought it might be helpful to others in the future to list a few things I have found along the way re parts etc

If anyone has anything useful to add please do, it will be good reference for the future

Coulters

Latter 90 series 1 piece coulters can be fitted to earlier drill but doing so requires the seed tube as well, this seems to be a worthwhile upgrade when replacing as the newer coulter sits differently on the disc and should produce a narrower slot, they are also cheaper than the 2 piece coulters

Gauge wheel arm pt no AN281871 now replaced by pt no AA73951 / AN282127 (LH/RH) the LH costs about £50 full retail and the RH costs about £70 - the only difference between LH and RH is the gresse nipple position and it really doesn't matter a lot if it on the front or rear of the arm so save £20 each and buy all LH arms

Depth adjuster arm AN281586 / AN28157 is drop forged and wears over time which will affect accuracy of seeding depth - they also cost £78 each !

I have a friend who has made a jig and is machining them out and making wear plates to insert at a fraction of this cost - if anyone need to refurb these in the future I will pass on his details

Pins and bushes

I have had copies made of the following at about 50% JD prices - made from same hardness steels etc

N218547 Bush (seed firming press wheel)

N280648 Bush (closing wheel)

N282536 Pin (opener arm)

On the pins & bushes I may be calling on you in a couple of years over this.

I have had to play around with the depth adjusting arm already, a mates advice, don't weld to rebuild as they are prone cracking.

discounted welding for this reason as they are drop forged - the machine out and insert pressed steel wear plate is a great solution though - I will post some pics when they are back from the engineers.

OOHHH cripes, I welded mine. welded up and leveled off with the grinder. They are still there but have't done big acreage. Did you use the craft bushing kit that me and guy got clive?

Not used that kit in the end - I've had my own version made and bushed all 3 holes

Did you ever take any pictures of the depth adjusting arm wear plate mod? Mine could do with sorting out, I was thinking of welding & smoothing off with grinder like marco.. but sounds like I'd better not.

Has anyone got any experience of dealing with craft air services? Only I emailed them last week about a price for their JD drill fix kit but have heard nothing since..

@MRA I imported the kit from the usa for myself and guy with enough bushes for his 6m and my 4meter. Now i did have to email mr craft more than once to get a reply but when i did get talking to him he was a real nice guy to do buisness with, searching around for a few days to get me the cheapest postage etc. I'm not sure if you want to get in contact with guy and see if he still has the kit? but you'd still need to buy bushings for your drill.

Oh ya i was really happy with the fit of the bushes and the kit in general.

I hope guys name is the same as on the bff, @155tm i'll try that and see if its him

Thanks, I've spoken to Guy via twitter - in fact it was him who put me onto craft air services for the kit before I realised it had been mentioned on here too. I'll send another email and see if I can get a reply.

Interesting to hear you've welded your depth adjusting arms too - I've only done one so far but having read it's not a good idea on here I'm not sure if I should carry on welding them or seek an alternative method like @Clive has?

Of course each to their own. However. Having gone down the road of tree hugging save the environment with DD for a decade. As I predictided
To now embrace generation 2 of spurious spares a direct copy of across the pond seems a bit much. Why not maintain our unique European quirkeyness. Just a thought afore we all become Dwayne.
