750A spoked gauge wheels

When setting or playing about with the gap between the tyres and discs it's worth giving the pinch bolt another check. If it has been loose the wheel holder can have slid away from the disc, increasing the gap.

The scraper rings seem like a good idea to me. Any one on them in the UK?

THAT is why you need the steel scraper ring on your gauge wheel

Run them up against the disc

Two basic styles. One is a fabricated ring that is pressed / glued onto the tyre

The other is like a pressed metal "dish" that bolts inside the gauge wheel, using the bolts that hold the 2 halves together.

They do work on closed gauge wheels, but obviously the spoked ones do allow more mud to fall out

Do you have "slugs" if you have wet conditions like that, or is it mainly so dry and hot , you will never of heard of slugs.
Slugs are the nightmare of D/D farmers in the UK.

Yeah, slugs aren't really a problem here. To be honest, they've never been a problem as far as I know As you say, probably too hot & dry, plus we have a lot of predator insects & spiders etc which help us a lot

I know snails ( & probably slugs ) can be a real problem in the cooler wetter areas of Victoria, especially in canola, but very different climate to us

PS - that really wet picture was after I was stopped due to rain - we don't normally plant into conditions like that :)

My tires lasted 2 seasons and had all ripped the lip to some degree. Changed them for Needham 2 3/4 urethane wheels and tires and have had no problem. Can also run them closer to the disc. Soft wet sand was my biggest problem last year , so i just backed the pressure right off and that helped.
If i was to do it again i would go 3" tires so i could use either the JD or mudsmith rims.
Just wondering how the urethane tyres leave the soil compared to rubber ie any less obvious compaction on moist soil?

They're much harder than the rubber ones (obviously) To counter any compaction ( if your really worried about it) , just reduce the coultler pressure.
Always trying to run as little pressure as will maintain seed depth, always remember a college lecturer saying rubber roller was the best way to induce compaction, hence a paver uses one to compact tatmac. Just occoured to me a different compound might help a little. One customers agronamist has comented on a horizontal layer at 2 inches depth may be from the first year of use before I better understood how the varioue elements interacted.

I sow into worked ground quite often, and there is a huge difference between where the machine transport wheels run (slower to germinate, but little difference in the end). I have not seen any difference with different gauge wheels. But once again if your truely concerned, i would argue that a 2 3/4 inch versus a 4 1/2 inch wheel is contacting the ground less overall .
This does make me wonder though? All i have read on this forum is about people "rolling" paddocks after sowing....Doesn't happen down here (unless its fine seed like lucerne and is being sown with a tine drill). Does that not lead to compaction too??

How are folks getting on with spoked gauge wheels, any issues should have come to light by now.

After the last six months of extreme drilling it is something I'm seriously considering upgrading to for an easier life.

So has anyone priced them recently? (DM if you want)

What is the current part number because JD loves to change part numbers for fun ?

@Farmer Roy have you seen these?

haven’t seen them working, but yes

was pretty keen to try them on my Norseman planter ( double disc precision planter with JD vacuum boxes ) this summer, as it needs new gauge wheel tyres & bearings anyway

was also keen on the closing wheels as well

havent checked a price yet . . .
