We've recently bought an 84 Ford 7610 4wd and one of the kingpins was starting to fail so I decided to do it before it got bad. digging into it I decided to do a few seals, bushes and UJs too.
Sure a UJ is only €30, a seal only €15 and all of a sudden I've nearly €500 in parts coming in the post
Anyway I've a couple of questions.....
Is there anything special to changing the UJs in a double cardan joint? is is just twice the work? Mark the yokes/double bit to ensure it goes back together the same way, but apart from that just the same?
What about preload on the bearings? I've only done kingpins in a landy before and there you use a spring balance off the steering hole to get a particular amount of preload on the bearings, adjusted by shims. Are these as precise? if so anyone have a spec on how to measure it?
Have this bushing through the stub axle, and similar one in the axle tube. is a careful chiselling the only real option here? there's very little clearance underneath to get a pullers under it and I'm not sure sykes pykavent take kidneys to buy a proper blind puller to find out if it's got the room to grip it or not.
