Looking at making some tipping trailers out of 8 wheeler body’s . Hoping to get 20 tonne on so thinking they will need to be tri axle what are peoples thoughts on triaxle tipping trailers as have heard they don’t put enough weight on tractor and can push backend of tractor about ???

If you are going to use the front mounted ram for tipping you will probably not have enough oil in the tractor to tip it

seen some proper smart ones about. only need to be twin axle to take 20t, but careful on your tyre choice if changing to floatations. will need a separate pto hydraulic pump and reservoir for tipping.

the old 8 wheeler will obviously already have the pump and reservoir so can modify that to suit

2 axles! So you think 7 or 8 ton hitch load is ok?

Either put flotations on the lorry and get it reclassified as agricultural vehicle, buy a proper trailer or remove the box and mount it to an ag chassis with frame and rams fitted as per normal ag trailers.

you’ll struggle to have enough oil to tip the single rammed lorry body with a tractor, it’ll be painfully slow and if you go down the road of pto pumps you’ll wish you’d never started.
From what I’ve seen with our old 6wheeler conversions, the rear suspension set up doesn’t lend itself to stability with no front wheels either, plus if you reuse the axles you’ve a great big diff housing dragging it’s belly in bouts of straw or acting as a land anchor in soft going.

If it was me I'd probably only use the skip and tip cylinder (assuming the tractor had enough oil).
Quite quick and easy to knock up a new box section chassis, get some second hand hgv trailer axles and fit.
You'll end up with a much more stable, balanced trailer as well.

Been involved in doing a couple best bet is to take purely the allybody off the wagon leave the rest more bother than it’s worth and then put a sub frame underneath and then put the rams onto the subframe like a conventional ag trailer and then build a conventional chassis underneath with the appropriately positioned axles etc.

Yeah looking at doing this using some heavy box section then using some bpw air sus axles. Going to use an aggregate body and Edbro ram which oil requirement is 65 to 70 litres our mf 7722 vt has capacity of about 95 i belive so should do it. Looking at having chassis past body at frount and welding some plate on top of chassis to bolt ram to. Like the heavy duty build of these body’s and how substantial tipping hinge is at back

As long as you put axles in the right place you'll get enough drawbar weight and I can't see it pushing the backend around much as long as the driver is sensible.
We run a pair of converted 8 wheelers and they ride better than any ag trailer because of the anti roll bars.
With the ram being right at the front they'll tip anything you can put in them too.

They're certainly stronger than anything ag and you can find good used ones for next to nothing.
Just a word of warning, just cause your tractor can hold 95 litres doesn't mean it'll pump anything like that much out of a spool.

We’ve a few trailers with the big ram at the front. As long as the back end is up to the full mark it’s not an issue tipping and that’s with McCormick ttx’s.
