8240 pto appears to slip under load

The pto on my white top '94 8240 (16x16) appears to slip and I don't know why. While baling this summer my BR740A plugged and stopped turning. The drive shaft to the baler stopped turning but tractor kept running with the pto engaged (switch light stayed on). Slip clutch on the baler did not engage although it was recently burnished. I think that the baler should have swallowed the plug or the baler slip clutch should have engaged. Any ideas on what is going on with the pto? Tractor has about 10k hours and otherwise works as it should. It slowly starts up my 10-ft discbine and runs it fine once at 1900 rpm.

Was hoping for something less intrusive, and cheaper. Relay, solenoid, voltage? Anything to try before strip down.

Thanks for the feedback. Going to look for a price to have the clutch pack replaced. Any ideas on what it should cost?

Maybe worth getting the low pressure circuit checked as if its low it wont grip up the clutch pack and that will let it slip. Same hyd circuit does 4wd, diff lock, and gear box clutch packs so a leak can affect any of them.

If its been slipped at all its goosed.
Lift rear of cab up, lift top off(engine crane is the job for this, can leave it hanging while fixing the rest), and pull the pack up and out. Do the wire to the solenoid while you are in there. Replace the PTO brake band as well, and set it right which is the trick.
Its work but nothing particularly hard, did one of ours at about 13,000hrs, was on a mixer wagon a lot which is a savage start up on pto. The other one on 17000hrs would need doing if it was on the mixer job, as its a bit slow on the uptake.

Thanks Femerboy and others. This has been a big help. No problems with diff lock, 4wd or clutch packs. Thinking back, this was probably the 2nd summer the pto clutch slipped on what appeared to be baler plugs. I'm on the list for a local tech to replace the clutch pack etc later this winter. He has done one on a 7740 recently and says he knows how. Will also replace the solenoid wire and brake band. Any guidance or info reference on setting the brake band properly would be appreciated. I'll pass it on to the tech.
