They will be using it from 10 November but we will get a reduction in classification charges by 80p. They will also reduce the upper weight limit from 450kgs to 420kgs, with cattle over 450kgs will be paid at gross 450kgs price

-O 3+ will see a reduction of 15pkg :(

Results in NI/ Scotland has shown that better grade cattle will be one grade higher than currently and poor grades will be one grade lower than currently!

The grid looks complicated but it prob wont be when you are more used to it.

Would be helpfull if ABP could do some pictures of cattle to show which ones will be in which grade band ( like Eblex have on their website for the current grading system )

Ref the higher weight, because of the high price of stores/ stirks etc, more people are taking cattle to very high weights to try and cover the increased costs of the stores/ stirks!

Not sure why Cattlemans friend is very upset for as ABP said months ago that they were intending to introduce the new grid/ VLA this year so its not a shock and they passing on the savings gained by using VLA to classify cattle!

I think what it will mean is you will see a much bigger difference in the store markets between good and poor grade cattle than you currently see.

That would be no bad thing.
Make the beggars bid for them at the market price not what they think they can get away with.
Reduction in classification charges will just be a sweetener to make it palatable enough for everyone to accept the change. Will have calculated they will be saving way more than this under new system so throw the farmer a few scraps and he'll be happy enough to ensure our continuation of supply;)

The general feedback I hear from suppliers at ABP at Perth is that good cattle are now better rewarded and plain cattle ie. dairy bred types more heavily penalised, the way forward surely.Previously with manual grading, an R grade covered a very wide band.

seems to be very similar to the Irish setup, upwards pricing of base is the same but downwards pricing from base is double for each step as opposed to Ireland. We are 6c for steps up from base and 6c steps down from base.

Cow price for everything over 36 months !!!

We been on machine grading for a year nearly now at perth, been ok. But they have now cut weights and changed grid too the above one, means we now 5p a kilo worse off than we were. They going too lose a lot off cattle now from our part off the world.

Cutting carcass weights and this new grid is obviously designed to pay you less for each beast...I don't know why anyone supplies them the way they go on....they are desperate to finish the beef job off

I think the fieldsman picking the cattle on farm needs to be on performance related pay.

Few times here he's picked cattle that after we've seen the kill sheet should have stayed on farm longer!

Do you find that the machine is more consistent? We find big variation from one week to the next and from different abattoirs.
