A/D and glycerine

Kemble Farms used to, but they are now under new ownership. Glycerol gives a good boost to digestion at relatively low cost. We do not have the option as our permits do not allow any imported material.

A lot of German digesters used to use it. Initially it was a waste from the bio diesel industry and they got it for free. Its like rocket fuel and really boosted gas yields, so a lot of money was made from free feedstock. Then the biodiesel industry cottoned on and started charging for it, much narrower margin against gas yield. Bio diesel production seems to be much lower and there is a lot less available in Germany. Don't know about here, any UK material is probably still being shipped to Germany?

i was thinking of the biodiesel industry only yesterday.
I used to make homebrew (was about the 4th person in mid and North Wales to be registered with HMRC as a fuel producer)
anyway i developed a rig for making the stuff out of bits of farm scrap (milk tanks, oil fired boiler, old ladder chassis etc) and it was worth a few quid. I got bored (essentially) of it so stopped a few years ago. As fuel price in real terms fell, lots of people stopped bothering with veg oil and biodiesel. I think it may pick up in the near future as fuel prices begin to rise significantly as i believe they will. If so, my rig will be up for sale, as its value will increase.

glycerine is a by product, though to go in a digester i assume it would need the chemicals getting out of it as they would kill teh bugs.

Kemble farms wanted to use UK glycerol, but the Env Agency classed it as waste, so they imported from Holland where it was not waste but byproduct. So much for a European level playing field!

As with everything in AD, there is a cost vs benefit, i.e. cost vs gas production. Glycerine is too expensive here, it seems to be in low supply and high demand as it can be fed to cattle amongst other things.

Glycerine / Glycerol there is a difference, I think it is to do with the alcohol content and transportation. However as suggested as a feed-stock it is rocket fuel, a liquid high in DM.

Around double the gas production of Maize Silage, Glycerine is tank stored (heated tank) and very fast to digest, so several costs need considered not just the price per ton of the Glycerine.

On the negative side, it creates instability if to much is used, so I would suggest no more than 10-15% max of the overall total.

Yes that's right.
It's Soap.
Depends what catylist is used be it sodium or Potassium Hydroxide in Bio diesel production .

No. I was first registered quite a while before they brought that rule in.
when i started, you had to register to use any biodiesel/veg oil. it was some time later, due to the number of people registering who produced small volumes that the 2000 litre/year derogation was introducted, at which point i de-registered.
I use KOH as my catalyst as it was easier to get rid of
