January was a fairly mild month, no real cold until right at the end. No real snowfall either. They're actually saying we're currently in a snow drought in this region and since I love snow, I'm hoping that changes. I'd rather snow than extreme cold! February has been frigid so far which is what they've been saying is going to happen so at least they got something right. Cows are happy as long as they have full stomachs. First calf should be on the ground in a couple weeks, fingers crossed it's a little bit warmer then!

The Front Yard - Just a little bit of blowing snow to fill in the tracks.

The Back Pond - The dairy girls and the remaining calves from last year are actually back here with their bale right now. Obviously they aren't going anywhere other than the bale though, there's no tracks anywhere!

Still f**king cold :ninja: 18 more days until spring? :ROFLMAO:

Current temperature: -25C, feels like -33C

Normal temperature: Max 0C Min -11C

Weather Info from February:

Weather info from February 2018:

- a low of -34.7C
- total precipitation of 16.2 mm
- maximum wind gust of 63 km/h

I don't know the exact stretch but I'm pretty sure they're saying February broke records. Coldest Feb in 40 years. Lots of places were setting records for days below zero - since we usually do get above zero at some point. Right now I'm sitting at 30 days without going above 0C. Haven't had much snowfall, still in that snow drought, but did get a couple systems come through and blow it around. It's bare in the open but banked up good in some places. I'm ready for warm weather and rain though! I think they're saying mid month we're supposed to warm up and my long range forecast is saying after the 10th it's all highs in the pluses. Time will tell.

Are you concerned about soil moisture yet with so little snow is that where most of your moisture comes from snow melt?

No, most of the moisture for growing is rain. The snow only helps so much. It can’t infiltrate into the soil easily when the frost is still in the ground so a lot of it just ends up as run off or evaporates.

There are worries about moisture because last year was so dry. There isn’t a lot of reserve around anymore. But the only thing that’s going to fix that worry is rain.

Did something similar a couple of years ago as we have a trig point on top of a hill in 1 of our grass fields, tried to take a photo N S E W on the 1st of the month for a year, pics are on computer somewhere, didn’t record time or temperature tho but was still good to see how the same views changed over the year

Hoping for some serious rain in April. So far any time they forecast it it disappears a few days prior to delivery. Go figure. The snow is almost all gone, farmers are getting their drills ready and seed cleaning all finished up. Expecting to see field work really take off by the end of this week.

The Front Yard - Starting to green up. The straw I spread as a cover is slowly disappearing as the grass starts to grow.

The Field Across the Road - Starting to prep the fields for seeding. The weather has been a bit chilly so some farmers are seeding and some are waiting for it to warm up.

The Back Pond - One lonely goose back here still. I'd like a big month of rain to fill the pothole back up though.

Your ahead of us in the east. Just barely broke 20 for the first time yesterday. Most of the farms near me are just dreaming of getting on the land. Still saturated wet from the heavy rains the last couple of weeks. But any well drained land should dry out quick now with some heat on it.
We're dry here, too wet is not an issue. The problem is around Easter it got super nice and everyone got excited to seed but it's been snowing since the last week of April. Not sure how much reseeding might need to get done on wheat and peas.

Been a couple of smoky days here due to wildfires up north. It's kind of helped keep the temperatures lower than they originally predicted which is nice, not baking us quite so bad. Hopefully now that the smoke is starting to clear that means some rain will come in behind it. A couple of weeks ago a good system went over here and dumped 8/10 so we aren't as dire as some people close by but a good month of rain would not go amiss!

The Front Yard - My straw is almost all grown through! The apple trees are really starting to bloom now too. Hopefully there won't be any hard frosts now and they waited long enough. Even the trees are leafing out!

The Back Pond - Willow came for a walk this time. The water is almost all gone but grass is looking ok back here and there's a lot of wildflowers showing up since I haven't let the cows on it yet. A nice gentleman told me the ones I thought were toadflax are actually buffalo beans so happy about that! Have to figure out what the others are.... Had a pair of geese nesting on the pile of wood but something must have found the nest as they're gone now. Was looking forward to some goslings!

Thank you for posting. every month I expect to see the extremes of temperature shrink, but May showed you -8 to 28.6. To those in the UK a monthly swing of 36C doesn't compute. We barely do this in a year, never mind a month. Mind blowing.

Thank you for posting. This has been so many things, informative, eye-opening and generous. Please don't stop

Your dry pond is a bit alarming  here's hoping you get some of that elusive wet matter!
The pond at work is just about full, last time I noticed it running out the overflow pipe was Sept 27 last year (n)

As above, I really enjoy this thread, cheers for keeping it going (y)

Well we got the rain we wanted in June. Some guys locally got around 5" within 10 days. They're now saying they're too wet  Highly doubt it'll be enough to get us through to harvest but it definitely gave the crops and grass a good boost. Some uneven germination in canola but otherwise it's mostly starting the bolting phase, wheat is in flag leaf and starting to head, barley is trying to decide if it should die from wet feet or just carry on, peas are starting to get some height to them. Grass is loving it, my yard is a jungle and the cows aren't keeping up to their pasture yet so all good things going into July. Here's to some good dumps of rain in some noisy storms, without any hail damage!

The Field Across the Road - Wheat is looking good here, just starting to get some heads. No sign of leaf disease yet although quite a few guys are applying fungicides after all the rain.

The Back Pond - Lots of neat stuff growing back here since I didn't let the cows in it at all after mid May. Didn't check to see if there's any water still left in the pond, had the farrier coming for the horse so had to book it back to the house. If there is any water there it isn't much, which is saying something after a solid 3.5" in the yard (according to my rain gauge)
