There's a website somewhere which gives average salaries for different jobs.Maybe that would give a
My OH is a lorry driver, goes away Sunday or Monday and comes home Friday or Saturday. About £8 or £9 an hour, if he didn't get the overtime / night out money the wages would be rubbish. Not an easy job either, lots of regulations any one broken and he could be put off the road.
Has he thought about getting a tractor job?

They are called trampers because they live like tramps, ive met more that hate it than like it, sleeping in a truck is one thing sleeping in a truck in a layby on the side of a busy road with pikeys staeling your fuel and ladies knocking on the door is another thing, like you it would not be for me.
always said it doesn't mater haw many hours I work in a day at least I go home to see misses:)

That's fair enough but the workload that the OP reckons he will have in the coming months means that he will be working more hours than your hubby for the same or less money......

I think I'd better point out that most of the time he likes his job. I was just trying to point out that driving lorries for a living doesn't mean you see more of your family, or earn megabucks! Were both happy with our lot!

yes but he will be home every night , may be late , but if he has kids and working late his partner can come to the field for tea and bring kids even if for only 10/15 mins cannot do that if 300 mile from home in a tin box,

Yep but the point is if its for yourself or you are getting time in lieu/ a really good wage then that's fair enough... but doesn't sound that is the case with the OP situation......
when you work on a large veg farm days off are few and far between when you start you are told long hours think of of harvest and autumn drilling /cultivations 12 month a year its hard to get holidays

A truck driver that's out all week will be earning a good 40k plus pa - I used to have to pay a few of them and most had a fraction of the work ethic and skill of my farm workers
A lot of my mates drive trucks, one owns and runs a dozen etc they have all had a few jobs from livestock 4 deckers, tramping lowloaders with exeptinal loads, some even have spent months abroad, none of them have earnt 40k that's rubbish !, oh one did he had to live in London for the summer following a crane with its weights worked like a dog and ended up no better off in the end and missed his wife n kids for 6 month. 40k my arse

Yes.No doubt about that.My point was more to do with the spirit of the thing than the legalities.

I have never heard of it being a problem anywhere. Condition of the job & all that. A somewhat toothless bit of legislation IMO. There was talk of tightening it up a while ago but lots of industry pressure quashed that.

My best mate is a tramper on containers. Its not exactly hard work. new lorry every two years. Does 3-4 nights out per week. Normally earns 40k per year!
I made him redundant when i used to be his farm manager as he could earn more in lorries. Plus he couldbt drive tractors for toffee!!!!
